I don't think I've ever listened to anything by this band, though I've heard the band name many times before. With so few new releases I decided to check this one out. This was a good decision.
They've been around for quite a while, correct? Vocally for me it will take a bit to sort of wear in, but still really dig it. I would venture as far to say that dude from Code Orange owes a bit to this singer, style-wise.
Since 2002 so yeah. Andrew isn’t their original singer but stepped up from guitar once their original vocalist, Scott, left. Two very different vocal styles but Andrew had a metalcore band prior to CBK. I can’t really say Jami and Andrew have similar vocals styles but they both come from hardcore. But if you hear it those are two very good vocalists!
Yeah, by no means am I well-versed in the nuances of hardcore vocalists. As I get a bit deeper into the album, I hear it less actually. I think it was just the first association I made. Face the Fire does indeed fucking kick ass.
I totally get it. Code Orange are one of the biggest “hardcore” bands right now so it’s a common reference point. If you would like more like this check out the hardcore thread.
Comeback Kid is a great gateway hardcore band bc jaded old heads that like Turn It Around and Wake the Dead and newer listeners can all come together. While it is distinctly hardcore, Andrew has a great ear for melody without being watered down and I think that allows for a wide audience appeal. Always enjoy new Comeback Kid.
Haven't listened to the whole album yet but watching this video gets me excited. 1) That show looks so fun...if I was still young 2) I can definitely sense the Wake The Dead vibes especially with the gang vocals
I listened to this on the way to work this morning at the job that is killing me fastly and it clicked. I need to go to a fucking show and go all out to these tracks
To echo CBK being a good gateway into hardcore Wake The Dead was the first hardcore record I remember listening to. Came out when I was 14 and definitely changed a lot for me.
Just think, some 14 year old kid will pop on Glow On (or Heavy Steps) for the first time and discover a ton of other bands. It’s fun to think about!
That excites me. Especially turnstile being on a late night show, I feel like they could expose a lot of kids now to hardcore/hardcore adjacent bands which is awesome.
Samesies when it comes to Comeback Kid being my gateway into hardcore. Broadcasting and Wake The Dead were huge for me growing up. Andrew's Chester Bennington-y vocals was a big draw, even though the Scott era is still essential and I have nothing but love for those early records. They also put on one hell of a show. I saw them back in 2011 and it remains the wildest set I've ever seen in terms of energy. It was... total chaos at some point. That was my first time witnessing a crowd actually go wild like I was used to see in hardcore live sets online. The amount of stage diving... One thing I'll always remember was the presence of a ~12-15 year old boy who wanted to crowdsurf but was initially too shy to do so, but then ended up doing it during the entire show while being constantly helped by folks. Must have made for a very cool memory for him.
What a blast, it feels like a spiritual sequel to Symptoms + Cures with the amount of anthemic hooks and melodies.
