Coldplay performed “Speed of Sound” live for the first time in years in Texas last night. Before the performance Chris Martin explained the choice:

We made an album 20 years ago which should have been a lot better, and it had a song on it called “Speed Of Sound,” which we never really play. But because we had to wait 15 minutes for the show to start because of the weather and all that, we thought, well, we’ve had such a good time here in El Paso. Why don’t we try to reclaim the song “Speed Of Sound”?

Wild that X&Y out here catching strays from the man who wrote it, damn.

Some context is probably needed but in 2005 we were definitely over-saturated with earnest ballad-y soft rock bands (Keane, Snow Patrol, The Fray, etc.) so X&Y kinda served as a punching bag for musical snobs. 20 years later, I think it's a good record but I can understand the exhaustion at the time which was also timed with the rise of snarky internet blogs whose main purpose was to punch up at mainstream acts like Coldplay.

X&Y runs circles around any of their recent discography. That album had some gems.

  5. Always get a little bummed when artists talk shit on my favorite albums by them.

How they could say that album “should’ve been a lot better” is wild. Especially compared to the most recent releases.

Speed of Sound is a beautiful song, but Talk is the true gem they need to “reclaim”

Well that album is miles better than anything they've released in the last decade. Newest one is absolute shit.

    Hey, remember Absolutepunk?

That's how I feel whenever I hear Kenny Vasoli talk about "Based on a True Story"

  16. I've only ever heard him mad about "The World" - is there more? I got the impression they took more issue with SILYMI.

The Hardest Part is my fave track from that album. Honestly, one of my fave songs by them ever.

In fairness, that album has several b-sides that absolutely should be on there.
