I’ve actually really liked the last couple. Not up to the standard of their earlier stuff, but they were cool, adventurous pop records. I loved how the last one played around with choral and classical influences and melded them with big Max Martin pop sounds. Curious how much this will be a direct sequel, versus something a little more “new” for them.
Interesting to note that this, unless I'm advised otherwise, doesn't appear to actually be MOTS vol II
Wonder if this will be more of a "nighttime" record like Ghost Stories. I thought Everyday Life was pretty fun, some of the more interesting experiments they've tried, even if it is sort of a well-disguised cutting room floor record.
And fwiw I think Music of the Spheres itself really holds up, especially after that incredible Wembley 2022 show
I didn't even see the live show, but I totally agree that album deserves more credit. Some bangers, some classic Coldplay ballads, some cool experimental stuff, and it flows really well/gets in and out in 42 minutes. Not up there with their best stuff, but a totally worthwhile entry in the catalog.
I am in total agreement. I also associate it as being this positive, fun album coming out of some of the worst pandemic days, and I will always appreciate that about it. Very excited to see where they go with the new one! Was able to snag one of the signed copies from their store.
I remember people ragging on that album when it got nominated for AOTY at the Grammy's the year before last, and I was like, "Uh...I think that's my favorite of the nominees?"
With how savvy Coldplay has been in recent years in courting big-name collaborators, Taylor might be on this album.
I'm really curious if they will include some version of "The Astronaut" on this, even if as a bonus track. It seems it would fit well!
Onboard for this. I relistened to most of MOTS this morning, and while it's not my favorite Coldplay album, it still has some good tunes on it. Although the whole "emoticons as song titles" thing is such a Coldplay thing to do, and that's not a compliment. For the record, my favorite Coldplay albums cycle between X+Y, Viva La Vida, and Ghost Stories.
They always do a big mainstream pop album, and then the next one is more experimental. I'm hoping the new one is the latter.
Always interested in new Coldplay but I hope its better than the last. It was fine enough but didnt make me feel anything at all. Kind of like a Dreamworks movie.
The last album is worth it alone for Coloratura. One of the best songs they’ve ever made IMO. I like everything they’ve ever done, but I do think Music of the Spheres is probably their weakest album. The back to back ballads in the middle of the album drag it down for me.
I feel a ranking coming on… Viva la Vida Ghost Stories Rush of Blood Parachutes Mylo X&Y Spheres Everyday Life Dreams
I completely forgot that Dreams existed. I actually wrote a blog last year reviewing their entire catalog. Parachutes Viva La Vida Rush of Blood Ghost Stories X&Y Everyday Life Mylo Spheres Dreams
