This is definitely their best since at least Mylo, IMO. Feels like they made a double album for the internet age, where it’s very concise and deliberately unambitious. Sounds like a knock but I think it’s a strength, at least for Coldplay.
Some of these Jordan performances are giving me straight chills. These guys are such a tight live act.
My version of / playlist for this album goes like this: 1. Flags 2. Church 3. Trouble In Town 4. Broken 5. Daddy 6. Arabesque 7. Guns 8. Orphans 9. Cry Cry Cry 10. Bani Adam 11. Champion of the World 12. Everyday Life Main thing is that there really isn't enough meat here to feel like a legit double album to me. A lot of the shorter songs feel half-baked. The most egregious being WOTW / POTP, which when played live in Jordan was pretty great but on the album just sounds like a phone recording Chris Martin made as an idea to later develop into a song. Sunrise is a very cool piece of music, but it feels like it has nothing to do with the rest of the album. The 3-song stretch of Èkó - Cry Cry Cry - Old Friends grinds the Sunset part of the album to a complete halt. Èkó and Old Friends are pleasant enough songs but I honestly find them to be pretty boring with not a whole lot going on. Cry Cry Cry is at least a fun stylistic curve-ball for them. Flags has to make the cut for me because it is one of my absolute favorites out of the entire lot.
I'm with you. I came here expecting to see people KILLING this album and am kinda shocked everyone likes it. A couple good songs but it feels SO pretentious to me and many of the little acoustic songs that have a chance seem unfinished. Easily my least favorite thing they've ever done.
I would love to have a version of Trouble In Town without that awful intermission/exchange with the police office I need to find a download link to the live performance ASAP!
Flags is the Japan-only bonus track and Bani Adam is what I have seen Track 14 called but that may be wrong. I am really glad you like that stretch but I honestly find it to be brutally boring and far too low energy. I really miss the rest of the band during that stretch.
Wait what the heck, this is projected to only debut at #3 with 80,000. Aren't Coldplay much bigger than that? Ghost Stories was a pretty low key, no promotion album and even that sold like 300k first week.
I think Magic and A Sky Full of Stars were much bigger than anything off this album, and streaming hadn’t completely killed bands at that point
Yeah I felt the lead singles for Ghost Stories hit much harder than the ones from Everyday Life. And the band didn't have the reputation of releasing a half-baked album at that point yet
This excites me, since I loved VLV but haven't really paid much attention since then. They've had a few good tunes since then (Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Ink) but none of the albums have grabbed me as a whole
I'd swap out "Broken" for "When I Need a Friend" and "Cry Cry Cry" for "Eko" and then this would be absolutely perfect imo
I understand the gripes about that three song stretch but I thought despite that there might still be chatter about Old Friends, which is my favourite song on the album.
Song By Song Review: Sunrise - I quite like this one. I like almost how that last violin harmonic note signifies the sun in view. Church - Pretty good I suppose but I especially like the female vocal part (Norah Shaqur) at the end. Trouble In Town - Best song so far when it hits the bridge after the spoken parts. BrokEn/Daddy - Gospel and sappy don't do much for me :/ WOTW/POTP - Almost sounds like it could have been good, but its buried in whatever we get here. Arabesque - Favorite song on here with the sax solos section being the highlight of the album. When I Need A Friend - It's fine. Guns - You could say this is my favorite 'short/unfinished' song off the album. Orphans - I didn't like this at first (Reminds me of their last album) but its grown on me a bit. Eko/Cry Cry Cry/Old Friends - This run is the low point here but that's not to say they're bad songs. They each have interesting things about them but not much beyond that. (Bani Adam?) - This instrumental is another nice one like Sunrise, and I like how it transitions into.. Champion Of The World - A welcome return of quality as one of the better songs of the album. Everyday Life - Another decent one, but not my favorite. Looking at Coldplay's Parachutes-MO run, this album kind of pales in comparison. It is better than their last album (Worst by far) but more in line with Ghost Stories. I wonder if these guys are still capable of giving us anything as good as their earlier material again.
Ekko and Old Friends are in my top half for this album, don't understand why they don't get more love. The only songs on here I'd be fine without are the title track and WOTW/POTP
I'm going to find more to like about this album the more I listen, but there wasn't anything too immediate on my first listen. That interlude in Trouble In Town was bad to the point I thought I had a tab autoplaying some unrelated video. Champion Of The World and Guns are growing.
This is my favorite upon initial listens since Viva la Vida. It's basically what I've hoped they'd put it for the past decade.
