Viva La Vida X & Y A Rush of Blood to the Head Ghost Stories Parachutes Everyday Life Mylo Xyloto A Head Full of Dreams
Just watching the Glastonbury livestream - they opened with Higher Power but they’ve just played another new song called Human Heart which has brought tears to my eyes. Absolutely loved it. Not sure who the two guest vocalists are but they were incredible.
Coldplay were so good at what they did, its very old man yelling at cloud of me but I'll never know why they decided to become dance-pop kings when they had already nailed a difficult balance of mainstream and critical success Anyhow yeah Viva La Vida is tops and an incredible album
because like you said, they'd already nailed that. why just keep repeating the same thing you've already done?
Exactly, they don't like to repeat themselves without refinement of, or expansion upon, one of their previous records.
they’ve never been a band to repeat themselves album to album. literally each album is distinctly different from those before.
I picked up Ghost Stories on vinyl on a big shopping spree at the record store yesterday, and that album is so fucking great. It bums me out that it got almost completely dismissed at the time.
All the songs are good on their own, but listening to them in sequence (particularly really late at night, or on a rainy day) just really brings home how great that album is as a piece. Every song ratchets up the heartbreak in a very particular way.
I sitll think it falls off a cliff after "Midnight" personally :( those first five songs would be an untouchable EP though also "All Your Friends" is a superb b-side
Im this comment will not be popular, but within the context of the album, I even like A Sky Full Of Stars a lot.
Yeah, "Sky Full of Stars" is absolutely pivotal to the arc of that album (and is a damn good pop song). "O" is the best song on the record and "Oceans" is gorgeous. Nothing wrong with side 2.
A Sky Full of Stars kills any chance of listening to the album as is straight through for me. Absolutely cannot stand that song. But the b-sides are all really great so I just drop a couple of those in and I'm good to go.
correct me if I'm wrong but "O" is the name of the short choral song that opens and closes the album right? and the "flock of birds" song has a different name that I can't recall either way: both are nice but I just don't go out of my way to spin them. certainly not in the same league as "Midnight" for me (then again few Coldplay songs are)
I didn't like "Sky Full of Stars" on Ghost Stories at first but I came around to it. I do love how the album otherwise flows and feels like a dark night of the soul kind of thing, where you can't sleep and suddenly it's morning (if that makes sense). I think they tried to recapture something similar on Everyday Life too but just not as well.
The first part is technically called "Fly On," but it's labeled just as "O" in the tracklist, and you'd never know it was called anything else unless you did some digging online. So, I think most people in this thread are just referring to the whole thing as "O."
