To be totally honest, I didn’t reach out to you privately because i don’t know you very well and it would have felt odd/out of place for me to do so. I’m sorry you’re going through a tough time. I don’t think some light teasing about a bad band is really THAT big of a deal, but it’s also ignorant of me to think that, so whatever. As for the gendered stuff you brought up in that original post, i thought it was odd and lacking any basis in reality then and i still do, but I understand they’re your feelings and don’t want to shortchange that.
head full of dreams is genuinely one of the worst albums i’ve heard in some time. jesus lol. why did they do that. oh well, i’m still somehow despite that pretty excited to dive into everyday life, given the hype
Having a difficult time staying into this album unfortunately. There is some beautiful stuff on here, but overall it feels incomplete and kind of forgettable. I like it better than the last one, but less than all the others. :/
Some Coldplay album thoughts: Parachutes - That first 6 song run is so good here A Rush Of Blood To The Head - Pretty much every song on here is really good but Politik, God Put A Smile.., Scientist and A Whisper are my favorites. The studio version of Clocks is good but I never listen to it because compared to their live versions the studio one sounds so tame and lacking energy. X&Y - Half of this album is incredibly strong (Square One, Fix You, Talk, Speed of Sound, The Hardest Part, Twisted Logic) and surpasses the quality of their previous albums but the other songs on here don’t for me. But I’d still say they have some good stuff in them. Viva La Vida - Their best album by miles, and I don’t see them topping it. Now this is an album with high quality content start to finish. Yes Lost! is the worst song on here but it’s still much better then a lot of their material. Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love might be my favorite Coldplay song ever, I have very strong emotional ties to it. Yes is another very good one, especially that second part. Life In Technicolor/Cemeteries In London are fantastic openers, Viva La Vida is a classic.. they really stepped up their game here. Mylo Xyloto - This is not a solid album start to finish but my god those highs. Paradise and Hurts Like Heaven are some of their best songs ever. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Major Minus, Princess In China, Don't Let It Break Your Heart are also fantastic. The energy and pop drive here are exactly what they failed to do so miserably on A Head Full Of Dreams. There is a lot of filler here, but at least it still has some heart in it. Ghost Stories - I’ve tried to give this album a chance various times, but it just won’t click. Their experimentation just doesn’t take the songs to great places imo. I do really love Midnight though, and I also like True Love and A Sky Full Of Stars but I don’t return to anything else on here. A Head Full Of Dreams - Also tried to give this another chance, still just not a good album. I really really do like Hymn For The Weekend though, that’s what I call a great pop song! I’ll barely give Adventure of a Lifetime and Amazing Day some credit.. but mostly everything else I don’t need to hear ever again. Everyday Life - Best album since Mylo. Top notch Coldplay in Arabesques, Trouble In Town, Church and Champion Of The World. Also like Sunrise and Guns. Still a lot of unnecessary stuff here. Prospekts March/Kaleidoscope EP - These EPs are really good! Life in Technicolor ii is great, Postcards From Far Away I liked so much I performed it for a piano recital. Glass Of Water is also top notch Coldplay. Then on Kaleidoscope you have All I Can Do Is Think About You and Hypnotised which are among some of the best stuff they’ve done, and to think they made this after A Head Full of Dreams!
To have such a great hook of a chorus over a 7/4 time signature... so good. That era to me will always be them at peak experimentation while retaining their pop sensibilities. I played the shit out of VLV/PM.
Just been thinking about it, and as someone who's followed them close forever/since I was a kid, I really think "Yellow" is still their best song. I love that guitar riff, it's so rowdy, like it's kinda drunk or something, and it works so well in that context. One of those songs that make you think an artist is really lucky to have written it.
there isn’t a standout song on this in particular that i would say is among their top 20 or so songs, but the vibe of this and, as a whole, it’s pretty good. maybe their best since x&y, which i didn’t expect. good for them
I know altering tracklists is a huge taboo around here, but in regards to Coldplay's weaker albums - when you look at the EP's, b-sides & bonus tracks from each era along with the albums themselves, they have never failed to deliver a fantastic album's worth of songs from each era. I would say they came closest during the Mylo Xyloto era, which didn't ultimately produce very many b-sides at all, at least not that I am aware of. I honestly think A Head Full of Dreams is a pretty bad album by anyone's standards but especially by Coldplay's, but some of the songs on the Kaleidoscope EP are absolutely incredible.
I feel like both Rush and X&Y each have enough great b-sides on their own to almost make another entire album of great material.
Parachutes X&Y A Rush of Blood to the Head Ghost Stories Viva La Vida Everyday Life Mylo Xyloto A Head Full of Dreams
Parachutes / A Rush of Blood to the Head / X&Y / Viva La Vida Mylo Xyloto / Ghost Stories / Everyday Life A Head Full of Dreams
Viva La Vida Ghost Stories A Rush Of Blood To The Head Parachutes X&Y Mylo Xyloto A Head Full Of Dreams Haven't given the new one enough listens yet, but it's definitely above X&Y so far.
Tough to rank albums but I think: Ghost Stories A Rush of Blood Mylo Xyloto Everyday Life (recency bias may be in play) Viva La Vida X&Y Parachutes A Head Full Of Dreams
Viva la Vida Parachutes X&Y A Rush of Blood to the Head Everyday Life Ghost Stories Mylo Xyloto A Head Full of Dreams Coldplay is my favorite band, and despite A Head Full of Dreams being their weakest in my opinion, I still really like it.
Mylo Xyloto (favorite album of all time) Viva La Vida Ghost Stories X&Y A Rush of Blood A Head Full of Dreams Everyday Life Parachutes
Also surprised at all the love X&Y gets in this thread. It's got some good songs, but definitely at the bottom tier of their albums for me. My biggest gripe with it is every song is too long.
