Guns of Summer is the Coheed/Glassjaw crossover we've always wanted, with a dash of Deftones. YOTBR is underrated as hell
YOTBR sticks out in their discography for a few reasons (drastically different production/tones, Chris Pennie overplaying on some tracks while too straight-forward on others; 2 things Josh Eppard never did), but it's still good. I agree it's underrated, but still remains the low point of the entire discography.
also if you watch the making of NWFT then the making of YOTBR, it is a VASTLY different vibe in the studio. They did not seemed excited about it at all.
I actually think those two records are more similar than people might think. Both wear their influences on their sleeves a lot, they are just different influences.
Josh Eppard is great and all, but let's not think he also hasn't played very straightforward on some Coheed songs and there's nothing wrong with him or Chris Pennie doing that. Pennie overplaying, like on Guns Of Summer, does hurt however. But I still like YOTBR, production and all, which is a pretty whack opinion but whatever
GoS is definitely a "let's do this one for Chris" song since he was known for that sort of chaotic playing with The DIllinger Escpe Plan. For that reason it bummed me out as a fan of TDEP to hear him play some simple patterns on songs like "Made Out Of Nothing" and "World Of Lines". It was a restrained Chris Pennie and didn't feel like a good fit for the Coheed feel and sound. I don't think his playing elevated their already great music. That said: he is THE MAN for taking on their entire discography for the Neverender tour. That's no easy feat to learn 4 albums worth of material.
Bottom 10 Coheed songs, from worst to not-worst Guns of Summer The Black Rainbow Young Love Subtraction The Broken Mothers of Men The Road and the Damned Colors When Skeletons Live Justice In Murder NOTE: I still actively enjoy almost all these songs to some extent until Young Love
I disagree hard with both of those takes. I love Colors and Made Out of Nothing is probably my 2nd least favorite Coheed song.
I consider myself a pretty decent guitarist. I can play riffs pretty well. But it's been over 10 years and I still can't figure out the no world for tomorrow riff. The rhythm throws me off. But it's one of my favorite riffs of all time, like top 3 easily
