I wasn’t crazy about most of NWFT when it arrived, but like others have said: it’s probably grown on me more than any have since. YOTBR hasn’t had a full spin from me in years but the Afterman records had me so gripped. Zach joining the band is probably the best thing that ever happened to the lineup after Josh coming back. Third might be working with Zakk Cervini. So much new life has come with all of these changes. I’m an old fan, but I love the growth of this band a lot.
It was just such a sonic shift from GA1 that it took time for a lot of people to adjust. Great album, just very different from what they had done.
NWFT was a huge disappointment for me when it came out. I’ve come to appreciate it but it still doesn’t reach my top 5 coheed albums
I actually don't remember any kind of sonic shift from Good Apollo and always thought of the two as a pair.
Yeah I stopped listening after NWFT but I can’t imagine liking everything before that and not liking NWFT. Sounded likes very logical next step to me. Then again I’m a simple man.
I can’t imagine any Coheed fan listening to the opening riff of NWFT and not getting immediately hyped. One of their best songs and my favorite album “opener” in their discography outside of IKS
Still cannot get down with the climax of On the Brink, especially the scream, but NWFT fucks otherwise
NWFT was the first album I was around for the release cycle for and I loved it, it was YotBR that had me check out of the band until Vaxis I (Good thing I backtracked to Afterman cause they're my favourites now)
NWFT definitely was a letdown in the mind of a teenager when I feel like it came out for most of us after GA1. Great album but near impossible to not have disappointments after the animal of GA1.
Only thing I have to add to the NWFT discussion is that I remember it being weird that there was only a cardboard sleeve for the CD when I bought it at release.
The art is also so lame coming off of GA:1 and how badass it was. I remember my 16 year old self thinking that was lame.
Yeah, but in context of what was going on in the story, the guillotine, and more felt so intense. Even though it was just a giant IV it was such a big statement of the next chapter where In Keeping 3 left off.
Update: Started a full disco run yesterday. I still am not sure what I don't enjoy about GA1 but there is definitely a change from IKSSE3. Maybe more metal guitar and longer drawn out songs? I dig the twinkly guitar sections on their first 2 albums a lot to and they seem to be less prevalent to the more big metal prog guitars on GA1. Lyrically and delivery I also like more on the first 2. Anyway onto NWFT...
Yeah the longer songs (IKS has TL&TG and 21:13 though), more metal guitars, darker tones, and the progressive structures are why I like GA:1 so much, haha.
Also would it kill them to throw all of Neverender on streaming? I have no issue using my Plex to listen, but I want others to enjoy it as well.
Still going... Vaxis 1 is pretty damn great. Easily my favorite release since In Keeping Secrets. Vaxis 2 also good and has some fun new sounds for them that I dig. But didn't grab me as much as Vaxis1. Only the new album left! Been fun to catch up on a band that I used to love so much. So far my coheed album rankings: SSTB - 5/5 EKSSE3 - 4/5 GA1 - 1/5 NFWT - 2/5 YoTBR - 2/5 Ascension - 1/5 Descension - 3/5 CBtS - 2.5/5 VaxisI - 4/5 Vaxis2 - 3.5/5 Edit: Vaxis3 - 2.5/5 Bit of a let down after the last 2 really caught me off guard.
