Mother superior is so fucking great man I remember hearing that when I was 15 and being blown the fuck away. No world for tomorrow as a whole was a big soundtrack to my life that year
When did all the NWFT fans get into Coheed? I got into them while SSTB was out and IKSOSE3 was about to come out. I came around to it but NWFT was disappointing to me at the time for some reason
I started liking them during IKS, they became my favorite band when GAIV came out. I had unrealistic expectations for NWFT, coming off of GAIV and the willing wells, and the suite of songs being 5 this time instead of 4. I was initially let down, but I’d probably put NWFT somewhere in the 3-5 range these days. EDIT: just remembered, I think I was 16 or 17 when it came out, and I remember car shopping with my mom and using my NWFT CD to test out the stereos of the cars we were test driving, lol
Revisiting the Afterman albums this morning and I have SUCH a soft spot in my heart for these albums. I had only been a fan of the band since 2010 (YOTBR was actually the first album I listened to from them), but they quickly became one of my favorite bands as I fell in love with SSTB and IKS when I got them later that year. In 2011, I started listening to the Good Apollo albums, to mixed results at the time. I remember being into GA1, though I was more selective of which songs I would listen to. NWFT, however, was an album that I only listened to a handful of songs from and didn’t enjoy much as a full album yet. YOTBR wanted on me over time as well. I definitely found myself falling into groupthink regarding NWFT and YOTBR that, in my short time being a fan, I started to wonder if they’d release an album that I loved again like SSTB and IKS. I’m so glad they did with the Afterman albums. I felt so rejuvenated by them and I think you could tell that they did too. I’ll also never forget the teaser videos coming out leading up to the albums, specifically the one where they alluded to Josh’s return to the band. I think Chris and Taylor (RIP king) did a great job on NWFT and the former again on YOTBR, but Josh fits the his band so well. He’s always had such an excellent feel for the pocket and flexes his muscles and mind with the groove of the song in mind. Dude has always been one of my favorite drummers and such an inspiration to me. This era of the band was so fucking rad. So many great songs too. The Key Entity songs, Goodnight Fair Lady, Number City, Gravity’s Union, Dark Side of Me, 2’s My Favorite 1…they cooked here
I prefer Descension between the two. I used to always think that Ascension had the higher highs while Descension had a better close and consistency, but I think the best songs on Descension are just as good as the best songs on Ascension
I'm really big on the Afterman records as well, that's about when I fully got into the band, so I guess that's no surprise. I'd probably have Descenion 3rd in my album rankings after IKSSE3 and GAIV
The Afterman was a shot of adrenaline into the band. Josh coming back was massive for them, his style just flows so well with Claudio and Travis, and does so many creative things. I was so happy when he came back, dude is easily my favorite drummer.
If you want to say Domino is the best proggy Coheed song post GAIV, I can get that. It’s competing against The End Complete, Gravity’s Union (my pick from this lot), The Dark Sentencer, and probably Ladders of Supremacy? I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to anything off IKS or GA though, from a prog standpoint.
three evils is close the “pull the trigger and the nightmare stops, forever you will learn” part of the outro puts tears into my eyes every time I hear it because it is a flawless melody
Honestly the only songs pre afterman I’d personally put above it are no world for tomorrow and in keeping in secrets and silent earth three title tracks
Three Evils might be the best song in their entire catalogue. literally the perfect journey through their pop, prog and post-hardcore variations the FOLLOWINGYOUCROSSTHEINTERSTATEWALKINGAWAYYY bit beats ass
