Holly Wood definitely redeemed itself with the prechorus and chorus, but man those verses are rough for me. NWFT is way better than YOTBR. how do people feel about The Afterman? i feel like if it was slightly more focused (13-15 songs instead of 18) it would be my 3rd favorite behind IKS and GA. Heck, it might be even with the filler.
Slightly lower than NWFT, but ahead of their lower tier releases. Some of the songs are beautiful, but I think something about the production holds it back some
Agree, there's a lot of fat that could've been cut out, especially on Ascension. Descension is fantastic, but some combination of the two would have put that album up there with SSTB and IKSSE for me.
yeah, if it had more consistent production (somewhere around domino, sentry, gravitys, and goodnight fair lady) and fewer songs its on the verge of being top tier coheed. oddly enough YOTBR turns 7 today, so there's that.
lol, I'd say "The Hound" is worse than almost every song on YOTBR. Absolutely epitomizes every reason why post-GA:IV Coheed is such a dropoff from early Coheed in a four-minute statement of utter cheese.
I definitely felt this way when Descension was released, and still do today: it could've been legitimately up there close to the first three LPs if it were a single disc with filler cut out. And yeah, better production would've helped its cause, too. Production has been a downfall for this band ever since YOTBR.
For me, it's: IKSSE3 SSTB GA:IV NWFT Afterman Ascension/Descension Color Before the Sun YOTBR I kind of dropped off on them after not loving YOTBR, didn't even listen to the subsequent albums when they first came out and only really came to them in the last year or so. Those top three are all-time classics for a reason, though.
IKS GA SSTB Afterman NWFT TCBTS YOTBR YOTBR is the only one that is subpar to me though. There is a lot to enjoy about each on a full listen through on the rest though.
Here's my list of top 35 Coheed songs, in case you care about that sort of thing lol. Two #1s because I literally can't decide.
IKS GA1 SSTB Afterman NWFT TCBTS YOTBR The Hound rules and I don't get singling out that song to despise and say is everything wrong with Coheed after GA1
Doesn't get any more epic than Willing Well I-II. Absolutely no question those are in my top 10. The sheer musical imagination that went into those riffs and chord progressions. Jumping seamlessly from one musical idea to another that's on the opposite side of the universe, then back again, all within one song... yet, sounding like a pop song at times. The essence of what makes (made?) this band special. Unfortunately, that part of them all but died at the end of that record.
Yeah, that is definitely the one big exception post-GA. It even sounds like a lost "Willing Well" track. Main difference being a lot of clipping and subpar production, sadly.
It's weird how all over the place production wise those two albums are. I know they wanted to scale back after YOTBR was overproduced and fucked with, but it was just odd. I still absolutely love The Afterman albums. Was a great return to form.
Gravity's Union? I always thought that song sounded like YOTBR fully realized. Just made a 13 track playlist of the afterman that opens with Sentry and ends with Domino, Vic, Evagria, Gravitys Union, and 2s my favorite 1. flows awesome. sets up kind of like GA with welcome home and ends with the entity extractions and gravitys union that plays like willing wells.
I think its probably 3rd for me behind IKS and GA. Too many good songs on it, and I think "Evagria" is one of their best kept secrets. "Number City" also. The Hound is such a good song, one of the better tracks on NWFT. Don't get this sentiment at all, especially with the greasy butt crack that is The Running Free right after it.
Hound, Running Free, Gunslingers... it's all the same to me. Absolutely unlistenable cheese. I find NWFT to be actively obnoxious and embarrassing (except a couple songs), whereas YOTBR sounds more like songs that were admirable on paper but weren't executed like they should've been. Neither is great, but I can at least sit through the latter.
Trying to order this vinyl on their site right now is a nightmare. Site is bogged down and crashing, but it's now in my cart!
