I mean both movies can and should exist. The more representation the better. And obviously Sound of Metal is better than this. Probably better than everything that was nominated this year. This year’s list of nominees is largely disappointing
It’s not a knock on the movie, it’s a knock on people forgetting/pretending like Sound of Metal doesn’t exist
I liked this a good amount, but as far as movies about the deaf community and music go, sound of metal was much more interesting.
this batch is much better than last year’s. minari was my favorite last year and probably would be fifth on my list this year.
yeah i obviously do not agree in the slightest. i liked that movie a lot but drive my car and a few others blow it out of the water
I would take four of the films this year over my favorite from last year. But last year only had a couple I really disliked, so most would go somewhere in the middle of the pack this year. 2020 was probably the best list of BP nominees in decades
Is there a thread where people list their favorites of the year regardless of it’s nominated or not? I’m interested in seeing that. There are a lot of movies I love way more than BP noms the last few years that barely get attention, whether bc it’s too arty or just not an Oscar film.
i think there is one at the end of the year but i usually don’t see everything from a release year until around this time of year anyways my top 5 this year is drive my car, licorice pizza, cmon cmon, dune and worst person in the world
The Worst Person in the World is my favourite of the last two years for sure. Dune is probably my favourite BP nom.
was never gonna be my first pick, but i guess i'm not about it winning if it means a starting point towards more disability-oriented films getting more popularity and accolades. just wish it wasn't the one where the lone abled member of the family wasn't at the forefront, and maybe a little curious about what it says that that was the case here
https://variety.com/2022/film/news/apple-coda-movie-theaters-open-captions-oscars-win-1235218804/ A movie that is perfectly fine as a streaming movie will be in theaters, I guess.
They spent 25 million dollars buying the movie and who knows how much on Oscar campaigning. They might not have seen the subscriptions rise the way they wanted. I imagine that the Will Smith story has significantly hurt any potential bounce the movie would have received.
I wonder if she was turning stuff down or if the opportunities weren't there. 2-plus years after all those awards and nothing since then.
