    The Fader:

Although 2017 was an off-cycle election year, Anschutz opened up his checkbook again and gave close to $200,000 to Republican politicians and Super PACs. […] He gave Senator Tipton $2,700 in August. Tipton opposes same sex marriage and abortion. Mike Coffman, a member of the House who opposes abortion, received $5,400 from Anschutz in August.

Fuck this guy. Blows my mind that progressive artists like Beyoncé, St. Vincent, Bleachers, etc. still support/play this festival.

Why do all articles about him use Coachella specifically? Because it's total clickbait.

    His company also owns....

    Los Angeles Galaxy
    50% of the Clippers
    part of the Lakers
    AXS ticketing company
Staples Center, home of the Lakers and Kings

and so, so, so, sooooooo many more things.

he also has zero creative control or any hand in Coachella itself, which has been brought up many times in previous articles.

But "Coachella" gets clicks, so here we are again.

Philip Anschutz is a shithead, yes, but these articles always focus on his connection to this one thing. I don't anyone condemning LA arenas or sports teams anywhere....

Why Boycotting Coachella Over Its Anti-Gay Owner Won't Solve Anything

  8. Because it’s a music website and they just announced a music festival Steve. This isn’t rocket science.

Yes I understand, that is not justification, it's still purposeful clickbait and distraction of the issue

  10. No it’s not. That’s literally *why* people should be alerted to it now. Calling this clickbait is fucking gross. You’re better than this.

Yes it is. Coachella is a known pot-stirring topic that MANY people love to hate. These articles will mostly serve for people to re-justify "Look Coachella sucks!!!!" and the takeaway rarely is "Look at this shitty person in power, what can we do to change it"

It's not rocket science, it's obvious clickbait that distracts from the actual issue while feeding an existing mindset

  12. Ok so you’re not better than this. I think it’s time you stop.

    Let's be friends guys!

The owner of Coachella is obviously a douche. That doesn't mean Coachella sucks by association. Look around the room your in. Most of that shit is produced by companies owned by douches. Boycotting Coachella is perfectly a fine stance to take and while it won't solve the problem, it doesn't hurt either. It's definitely not clickbait.

If the issue is that you love Coachella so much that other people saying it sucks hurts your feelings, tough titties.

Who cares if he’s anti gay. Everyone is allowed their own opinions and beliefs. Just because you don’t agree with him, you think people should boycott things he’s involved with? Move on

Plus their lobbying actively hurts gay people. That’s why people care.

  17. I care.

Nah, I don’t think we should just “move on” from bigots. Fuck that retrograde bullshit.

yes, there's problematic shit everywhere, even in our rooms. we just need to raise awareness of it and figure out what to do next in regards to how to combat it. the article talks about who he's donated to and what those people have said or done. it's not necessarily about coachella itself sucking. it's relevant to the music sites posting about it.

i think the only people who really get unnecessarily mad about coachella and festivals like it anymore are edgy teens/kids who weren't open minded about music genres, so we can dismiss those types. in a way, it's not much different to someone whose first response is "X band sucked anyway" when they hear about accusations of assault/abuse.

discrimination based on someone's sexuality, something they cannot help, is not an opinion. it's bigotry and should be dissuaded. lgbtq+ just want to exist peacefully in society like everybody else, but can't. they have existed for thousands of years like everyone else and yet are now suffering heavily in dozens of countries to varying extents around the world. no, it's not ok.

Who cares if he is anti black people? Who cares if he is anti women?

See how that doesn’t really work and is a very slippery slope?

I'd add, he's allowed to have that opinion, just as people are then allowed to have their opinion of him being a bigot and choose not to support his enterprises. Funny how defenders of bigotry like his support his freedom to an an opinion, but those rightfully offended by his opinion are not.

None of which will effect my decision to buy or not buy Coachella tickets in any way. Honestly, the line up is just not all that impressive this year.

being homophobic/transphobic/bigoted is more than an "opinion" or "belief." it results in tangible harm done to the LGBTQIA+ community. All the way from personal one-on-one interactions that result in slurs that can and will trigger panic/anxiety attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc to bullying violence and death of a marginalized person up to systemic oppression in the denial of basic rights like hospital visiting rights and protections against unjust firing from jobs for their sexual and gender identities for individuals. these "beliefs" have real world consequences that significantly harm people and they should be brought to the communities attention, no matter the level or degree of direct or indirect involvement because this matters a lot. maybe not to you, but it matters to those it impacts directly and their friends and loved ones.
