Oh damn, that’s my bad. Just watched that. I must have missed that one when it aired — the one that aired after the game didn’t have any footage from the first movie, and I thought that was the only one. Yeah, it does seem unfair to promote it that way, though the movie does offer some explanation for the first one.
the Cloverfield ship from THIS universe travels into another Universe where THAT UNIVERSE'S Cloverfield ship crashed in the ocean, there's been a war for 14 years but no monsters. When THIS UNIVERSE's station disappears, that's when the monsters show up in THIS UNIVERSE. This is all needlessly complicated for a movie that doesn't actually make sense.
Guys, a hand crawled on its own and gave out vital information, I don't think they're too concerned with how these things add up.
No I get that. That’s what I’m saying. The parallel dimension they travel to is (possibly) the 2008 Cloverfield universe. The thing we see crash into the ocean at the end of Cloverfield is the Cloverfield ship from that universe. Then the monster awakens not long after that. Alternatively, in Hamilton’s universe the monster awakens immediately after the Cloverfield ship vanishes. So there are two separate earths with two separate monsters. Meanwhile, on another earth in another dimension, they are invaded by aliens because of the rift that was created by the paradox. So the experiments they were doing in space opened a tear in the multiverse and affected every earth in various ways.
Maybe a monster comes after the crash, but there’s been a world war going on for 14 years in Universe 2 before the ship crashes. There is no war in the original cloverfield.
True enough as far as we’re told. No one certainly seems to be in a panic in the original about an energy crisis or people starving around the world. Who knows. Maybe it’s just another earth entirely, maybe the Cloverfield (2008) earth is the same one as we see in this film (though that doesn’t explain how people have these nice modern smartphones in 2008) and thus we still don’t know what that thing was that crashed in the Atlantic (unless it was a piece of Earth 2’s ship that transported back through time to that dimension or some shit), maybe it’s earth 2, who knows.
And the more I think about this, the more I realize that JJ is terrible at world building. He's great at setting up mystery and intrigue, but it consistently falls flat. See: Cloverfield, Lost, Fringe
I think people overestimate JJ’s involvement in these things. Besides slapping his name on them and probably giving some notes, he likely had little involvement with these latter two “Cloverfield” movies. He stepped away from “Lost” early on - that was pretty much all the Darlton. And basically wasn’t involved with “Fringe” after the second season.
Really I guess it’s all right there in the tagline on the poster. I already forgot Paradox takes place in 2028. The original is in 2008. The Shepherd particle accelerator is turned on in 2028, it opens a rift, and thus “the future unleashed every thing” (every “thing” not “everything”) into various corners of the multiverse. Aliens are pulled into one earth’s galaxy from some other dimension of their own because of the experiment. The Cloverfield baby monster is pulled into another universe in 2008. A giant mother Cloverfield monster is dropped into another universe in 2028, etc. Simple as that I guess. Edit: basically a giant hand wave to explain away the idea of these movies being an anthology series as a result of one experiment gone wrong in space.
I love the premise of "multiple dimensions, so we can do anything and it doesn't have to make sense. here's a walking arm. now there's a monster in the ocean somewhere else years ago. Sandwiches can talk, but only sometimes. Every dead kid is chillin somewhere." Its fun ya'll
That's all fair. It just bugs me so much that there never seems to be a plan in place. These awesome ideas devolve into muddled messes.
I dig this. I dig the whole multiverse thing. I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. But I need this visually explained to me. So someone post an informative youtube video when one comes out thanks.
I need another watch of this. On the one hand, it's hard for me to be objective about these movies, because I love anything and everything related to the Cloververse. On the other hand, I really felt like the film was trying to do too much in a short runtime, and ultimately nothing felt very satisfying to me. Loved certain scenes (and that last shot definitely floored me), but overall, it's definitely my least favorite of the three. I'm hoping Overlord will be an improvement.
I think calling it a lower tier “Black Mirror” episode is fitting. It wants to go in several different directions, but never commits to any of them, so it embraces being middle of the road. It was fine while it was on, but it’s obvious why it was dumped off to Netflix. As said, I’m still happy that this was directed by a Nigerian director and will hopefully be a jumping off point for him that’s not like Jurassic World III. I dont really blame the problems on him more than tinkering and trying to retrofit it into the Cloverfield universe.
I'm pretty sure JJ has already said in interviews that nothing really did crash into the ocean in the first movie and he didn't know what the heck it was/said that people were overthinking it. Maybe remembering wrong, but I'm not convinced something crashed and woke the monster. I thought it was more plausible due to drilling, but then this movie apparently conflicts with that
I actually think JJ’s world building in things like Lost and Fringe is great. It’s the plot that goes nowhere. Regardless it seems like JJ had very little involvement with this one.
Part of me feels like because the 2008 movie didn't do very well, JJ has thrown all the cool stuff from the old viral marketing out the window, not wanting to do a direct sequel or prequel, and hoping everyone just forgets about the hints and clues from back then. I feel like they may have had a plan for a true sequel/prequel, but when it got scrapped, it made things too hard to try and tie this movie into those clues, so they said "fuck it, nobody will remember".
It was just a satellite from the ARG that crashed in the first film. It wasn't meant to wake up Clover, just a little Easter egg for those that followed the ARG.
“Cloverfield” did really well for a small budget action flick with no well-known stars. I think JJ/Bad Robot likes surprising fans in different ways, whether it’s a surprise drop, weird book or mysterious show. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t.
Yep. They weren't as good as 2 and 3 but there were still plenty of strong ideas and great performances.
