Yep, this is awesome. Between this, Japandroids, Cherry Glazerr, and The Menzingers next week, 2017 is off to a really great start for rock music.
So many moments on this album. The lyrics on Up To The Surface, that riff in the middle of Darkened Rings, all of Enter Entirely, and the ending guitar licks of Realize My Fate.
A lot of this reminds me of something specific, mostly (but not limited to) the vocals, and I'm wondering if it's just prior CN material.
I'm in love with this album. It's the only album I've been coming back to. The MELODY at the end of Sight Unseen, ugh, and Realize My Fate's vocals kill me.
Its tokyo police club. Figured it out. This is the most quickly a CN record has dug its claws into me. Love this thing. Concise and self-assured with riffs and hooks for days. The drumming isn't as insanely impressive as the last record (what could be), but there's some solid work here too.
So the riff at 2:36 seconds into "Up To The Surface" is insanely similar sounding to the melody in "Viva La Vida" by coldplay. I cant unhear it haha.
I feel the same about this record as I do about the new Japandroids - it's fine, a decent listen, I can't really fault it too much, but it lacks that youthful urgency and as such just doesn't excite me the way their last two releases did. I remember seeing both bands play live for the first time at a festival in 2013 and it was a revelation, like the beginning of a new and exciting era of music. As time has passed they've gone away from that for me, not really their fault just a consequence of time. Now, I feel like I can listen to Cloud Nothings and/or Japandroids' decent new records, or I could use that time to seek something out that captures the spirit and excitement of what they were doing back in 2013. I know this is a really shitty justification for not being hyped on an album but there we have it. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood and my feelings will change and I'll grow to appreciate the nuances of what they're doing now over time.
Finally gave this a listen. Really really fucking good. I'm seeing some talk about the new Japandroids record on here and I have to be honest, I was bored by it.
this record has grown on me a ton, probably my favorite listen so far this year out of a dozen or so albums i've liked
This. The comparisons are unfair and largely unnecessary, especially when talking about japandroids. Following up a classic is tough.
Comparisons to each other or their previous albums? Idk two similar genre albums coming out on the same day is bound to draw comparisons. And bands will always have to face comparisons to their last album, fair or not
