Singing the chorus of "Viva la Vida" over the instrumental break in the second half of "Up to the Surface" was way more fun than I expected it to be

 

Yes! Finally someone else noticed this! Amirite?! It's like the exact same tune almost!

 

This album is awesome and, as a whole, the best they've ever sounded on record production-wise. This band is so so good

 

Agreed, but I will reiterate a previous comment. I feel like Darkened Ring's production falls off, in respect to the rest of the album's production quality. Probably my least favorite, but I still appreciate it.

I had said that Darkened Rings is the only track that I disliked at the start and never came around to, even upon tons of listens.

 

Yeah I just don't remember anyone mentioning the production as a point of dislike for it though.

I personally love Darkened Rings, but could see how it's a little jarring compared to the rest of the record.

 

Jarring might be the right word, I'm not sure. I just find it kind of annoying, it's hard to pin-point why. Something just sticks out about it, not in a good way.

I dont mind the other intense/jarring moments on the album(Strange Year, Realize My Fate, etc).

I just feel like you could cut Darkened Rings and the album gets better, I wouldnt mind Darkened Rings as a b-side at all.

 

Going to see these guys tonight. Really excited to see how the new record performs in a live setting

And I see some negative comments about Darkened Rings, if you see it performed live I think that would change your minds. I wasn't that high on it at first either but after hearing it tonight those thoughts are put to rest. It's played with so much energy that it gives it another feel entirely from what you hear on the album. Song rocks!

That's true. This is my favorite album of the year so far

 

I'd put it in at #2 behind Los Campesinos!

 

Still have this album in my regular rotation, great stuff.

I really enjoyed this when it came out, but now that the dust has settled I'm really starting to fall in love with this album. Up To The Surface is my favorite on here and I feel like, from Darkened Rings to Realize My Fate, this album just crushes it

 

Definitely my AOTY thus far. Mastodon might be close though.
