Tbh I see both sides of the setlist component, most frustrating show I ever saw was the Age of Adz tour (which was Sufjan's first show back in Boston in 5 years and went on sale before even a single was released) and I ended up absolutely loathing that album. I don't think fans are inherently shitty if they are more interested in a certain album or period of the artist's work, though I think it goes without saying you should expect a heavy dose of new material on a tour in support of a new album. With Clairo, I just felt especially aware of the bad vibes being a) an enormous fan of Sling, I think it's incredible, and b) definitely on the older end of the spectrum of her audience. Which of course, none of that is even really noteworthy when it sounds like the harassment is what's really brought the experience down for her. Ultimately, I'm not surprised she's taking a break - so shitty to see her get bras thrown on stage at her when that literal morning she had posted about it being uncomfortable when it happened the night before. And given that the tour poster itself advertised them as partnering with SafeTour to create harassment free shows it's even more frustrating.
That live session she did really turned me on to her stuff, her band is so tight, Zinnias and Amoeba are like some kind of Vanessa Carlton by way of Steely Dan shit and I really enjoy both
Immunity is still an amazing album, but Sling didn't hold onto me. Interested in the direction she goes with this.
Maybe I would have appreciated it more if I heard it live, but Immunity was on repeat for months without me hearing it live.
Sling opens with a 10 out of 10 opening 5 song run then is like a 7 or 8 for the rest of it. In hindsight it’s disappointing to have nothing that approaches Bags or Sofia or North in terms of pure catchiness, but that doesn’t bother me much. Imo it’s easily the most underrated album of the 2020s so far. It is extremely good live, too.
I wish I had heard it live because I’m in the boat of not appreciating it as much as I want to. Unfortunately, I was sick and had to sell my ticket when I was supposed to see her. I think I might give it another listen today and maybe it’ll finally click
I just never seen to remember much of it unfortunately, it feels shapeless. It's so quiet I forget it's on
I didn't really appreciate Clairo at all, even Immunity, until I saw her at ReSet and I was blown away
Sling feels like all style over substance, the musicianship and textures and production are beautiful and intricate, but the songs just aren't there
I love Immunity and her early work but Sling just doesn’t do it for me. I listened once and had zero desire to go back. I should probably give it another shot but I found myself just waiting for it to end.
I also never came around on Sling and my thoughts basically mirror Steve’s. The vibe is strong but the songs are not
