tbh, i don't think i've seen any new releases this year (that's about to change since i blindly picked up Dune: Part Two a couple days ago, having loved the first one but not getting around to the second one due to super busy schedules), but i'm desperately wanting to see I Saw the TV Glow. been avoiding spoilers like the plague. unfortunately the closest showing is two hours away from me, so i might have to wait for it to go to streaming to watch.
I’ve never liked a Garland film so I don’t know why I’m even bothering with this, but so far it feels kind of smug? Idk. I guess it’s competently made but I’m not feeling the writing at all. “YOU KNOW THERE’S A CIVIL WAR GOING ON, RIGHT?!” Mark Wahlberg ass line (Dunst and Spaeny are good tho)
Bought it on digital and it has no special features. Probably won’t release on the digital version until the blu ray releases.
Annihilation was fine, but I strongly disliked Ex Machina. It’s been too long since I’ve seen it so I hardly even remember why, although I do recall thinking it was going to have something more interesting to say. I haven’t seen Men and probably won’t.
Wild lol yeah, I wouldn't recommend Men to any non-Garland fans but I feel like those first two are relatively untouchable, Annihilation in particular. Oh well! Hah, I just saw it yesterday morning! Going to post more in the Last Move You Watched and a Review thread, as well as catch up on the movie's thread
Just watched the Netfilix documentary on Dan Rather called Rather. It made me think about the main characters of this flick and buy in more to their ethos of being objective at all costs.
Late to the party, but yah, the dialogue was overall pretty awful. And Wagner Moura was not doing it for me...at all.
Huh. So tbh this isn't really what I was expecting. On a superficial level, it was a road trip movie during a zombie apocalypse. As soon as the movie started my fear was, "this is just too giant of an idea, there's no way they're going to pull it off" And I was sorta right. The looked awesome. Loved the way it was shot and the way it looked. A ton of excellent scenes, good soundtrack, and the aura/atmosphere of the movie is excellent. Dunst is superb in this too. I guess overall the movie is making some point about journalism? There's a lotttttttt of "fill in the blanks with your own theories" going on in this movie. The movie isn't going to tell you shit about fuck what's going on...and okay... but I didn't understand why our journalist characters got the treatment they were getting? They are driving through a war zone and act surprised when someone with a dumpster of bodies threatens them (and I can't tell if they're surprised this kind of person exists or they're surprised they would attack someone with the word "press" written on their jacket). They didnt seem overly concerned about the guys with guns at the gas station, even though they have guys hanging in the car wash. Since the world building in the movie doesn't exist, i couldn't 100% get emotionally connected to our characters. They were all pretty cliche type characters too. I think 6-7/10 is pretty fair. I'll give credit for the original concept, the way it was shot, and I kindaaaa understand what they were going for, but in the end it was a little flat for such a big idea.
I was in from the moment Lee turned away to shoot the aftermath while Jeesie was still reeling from it. That’s when I was like “oh it’s going to be that type of movie”
^ yeah I was thinking this the other day. Mostly a week or so later I'm thinking "for such a huge concept, this has left 0 impact in my head" Very forgettable.
Still top five of the year for me. But I also went in with very low expectations and felt some personal connection to the film's tabula rasa presentation of journalistic ethics and disaffection regarding politics.
