First Light by Matsushita is a great record what happened to all those comps that were on Spotify? They’re not on Bandcamp anymore either
They were there a few months ago. That’s weird. But yeah it’s definitely not a genre well represented on Spotify. Japanese music in general is hard to come by.
have you been before? I’m under the impression that flights to/from are probably the most of what I need to save up for
No. I grew up in a hospitality family, which ironically means with few small-ish exceptions I have never been anywhere lol From Europe to Japan flights can be relatively cheap if you’re lucky and early. Don’t go during cherry blossom season though.
Had a skim through that track you put on your AOTY list and liked what I heard. Will definitely give it more of a listen. Love the general late 70s/early 80s aesthetic of it too.
That’s awesome. Here’s my playlist: Dreaming of Osaka: A City Pop Playlist, a playlist by mariuscjz on Spotify And an essential song that isn’t available anywhere in the West:
@cherrywaves This is a solid, regularly updated playlist with contemporary Japanese music of many genres btw. If the link doesn’t work: the playlist is called Tokyo Rising and it’s by Spotify. EDIT: Also, because the universe hates me, Plastic Love is now on that list, because apparently the album (a version of it at least) was added to Spotify shortly after or right before I got the CD.
hitomitoi discography is now on streaming services, all of her albums are among some of the best contemporary city pop has to offer
Getting DEEP into this genre along with new-wave, post-punk, art-pop, and other stuff from 80's Japan. Absolutely loving Mariya Takeuchi, Minako Yoshida, Haruomi Hosono, Akika Yano, Tatsuhiko Yamamoto, Maki Asakawa, Akina Nakamori, and more.
