The production does feel like it holds the album back a little which is a shame. I mean it doesnt totally drag the album down or anything but its certainly not Science Fiction that's for sure
@teebs41 so after listening to it for a little bit, do you think the second download you snagged actually sounded better? Or just wishful thinking? I got a dl code with the vinyl but I haven't actually tried it yet
I feel like I'm listening to a different album, haha. Then again I really didn't go into this with any specific expectations
I loved all the singles that they released, but now that I've listened through 6 or 7 times, my favorites are the awesome closing 1-2 punch of You Are a Star and Flowerchild.
I really like this and I think it's a great sound but I do miss the heavier elements. I feel like they could have really made some of these songs even more special if they took it the full way
I know people have been comparing them to Brand New for years, but if Youth was their Deja, EIGTH was their Daisy, I think this is their Science Fiction. Which is funny, because they couldn’t have even known that album existed when they were writing this one. I am also not trying to say this album is as good as SciFi.
I get the comparison to Brand New here, but if I was going to compare to any album in terms of the place in their career they are, I would say Artist in the Ambulance. Both albums took the bands current sound and brought it as far as they could. I think the guys in Citizen are also around the same age that Thrice was when they put out Artist. Hopefully we get their version of Vheissu next.
I think the song writing is here, they are using space really well with the guitars, issue is the bass and drums are pretty much always cranked so that low end never drops out, taking out bass on a few spots could have created space in a different way. Discrete routine is awesome bc of the stocatto bass note in the line, allows you to really hear the other parts. A bit more of that would have been nice.
It feels almost insane to say but I may be enjoying the new Circa more than this. Now it feels like I'm cheating on Ciz so I will say as much but not more. ok maybe a little more but it's been out longer lol
I take back what I said. I enjoy the Ciz record more it's just as much of a grower as the Circa record. Mat's vocals really do it for me. He's really great on this. Discrete Routine is so good. The closer easily rivals Ring of Chain as their best closer so far.
"Ugly Luck" "World" "You are a Star" "Flowerchild" "In the Middle of it All" "Medicine" "Control" Are all some freaking jams, the rest I really like as well, but those make me a happy camper whenever they come on.
As someone who loves everything this band has done, but also thought EIGTH was my favorite album of theirs prior to this one coming out, I kind of don't know where I want to rank this. I love it, and it's definitely going to be a top five album for me this year, but I need some more time before I can stack it up against EIGTH fairly. I definitely think it's their best album, though.
I started writing a post about why I loved the last album and then realized I’ve talked about it enough already
