It's a very good EP, it does make me want more though. Not sure if this was posted already but in this interview Anthony says they might do more EPs like this instead of albums:

This is the most into Circa Survive I've been in a hot minute. Really great sound for them.

This takes the sound from my favorite songs of theirs over the past few albums and expands upon it all in a nice lil 6 song package I’m in love

very happy for them. it seems like the fanbase at large was ready for this change. It's very cool to see how the Patreon was a kind of proof of concept for synthy circa. It definitely gave them the confidence they needed to pull the trigger on a curveball release.

That Brooklyn Vegan article is extremely enlightening. It seems like they are really committed to pushing out of their previous songwriting styles. I am definitely excited and only a little wary lol. This ep is definitely not my favorite, but I do like it. After tons of listening, it's starting to feel more at home with their catalogue. Songs like Spirit of the Stairwell, Suitcase, Think of Me, Who WIll Lie, Nesting Dolls, Phantom, Premonition of the Hex, Flesh and Bone. The seeds have been here since BSN.

I literally love this band so much. Besides JEW there’s no other band that’s had such a profound impact on my life and just my general perspective on life and all it entails, my perspective on myself, my mental health and addiction struggles, my perspective on others and their perspective on me, etc. listening to circa and reading Anthony’s lyrics forces me to look in the mirror in such a profound, in depth way that I’m not always prepared for but is wholly necessary and ultimately an exercise in humility and grace. Like I said you don’t get that from many bands, for me it’s circa and JEW that hit that profound, existential level of adoration and impact from their music. I’m just so blessed both of them are still around and making music, especially circa because I’ve gone through exactly what Anthony has, I’ve been to the brink, I’ve been institutionalized many times over, rehabs, psych wards, emergency rooms, full on lockdowns imposed by my loved ones to keep me safe, etc. and it’s just…I don’t know I can’t even put into words what it means to me to have an outlet like music, specifically this music, to explore those weighty topics and navigate some of the harder stuff I’ve had to go through. I just never feel alone.

  11. I really really love the last three songs on this EP, the first three are a bit more of a mixed bag though. Still haven’t made it through Drift without zoning out

It’s a shame that Circa feels like full lengths are wasted on their listeners, I don’t really know who’s actively listening to them in 2021 and not giving their full records a shake haha. But if they feel like EPs are the best thing for them creatively, then I’m here for it. Whatever keeps them going

Lots of people may only listen to a new full length once especially a band like circa that has a lot (not all, obviously) of fans rooted in the nostalgia of their first three albums. I have bands like that that I love earlier albums from and when a new album drops I only listen to it once, maybe, and just listen to the few tracks I like. Obviously circa is far from one of those kinds of bands for me but I get it. Like I like Silverstein a lot but I haven’t really been super into a full length since this is the way the wind shifts. I liked a couple songs on the last couple albums but couldn’t tell you if I ever actually listened to them in full more than a couple times, if at all. It happens.

  13. Yeah, there’s a chance I’m just too tuned into forums like this where people are still actively invested in them. Still, when I think of people that see Circa as “nostalgia”, I’m not really convinced that their outlook will change if the band simply puts out less songs haha. A more digestible release might not matter if the listener mostly just wants to hear Act Appalled again. But hey, who knows, it might. That’d be fucking rad. In any case, if it means we don’t go 4 years without a new record again then I’m all ears

Using my example, again, if Silverstein shifted to 5-6 song EP’s the odds of me spending time with every song would dramatically increase. It makes complete and total sense to me as someone who has bands like that in their library, idk why you’re pushing back that it wouldn’t increase the chances of people hearing more of their songs by releasing fewer songs at once. It seems very simple to me

Man idk what you want me to tell you lol. The post I made pretty clearly welcomes the possibility that this strategy pans out in their favor and reignites interest in full releases from them again. In my experience, cover to cover interest in a record depends more on how well the songs resonate with the listener, and less the song count itself. I’m not arguing that less songs won’t equal more listens per song. Just saying that I don’t think cutting releases in half inherently generates a drastic amount of additional interest from those that are really not at all invested in Circa Survive in 2021, similar to you with Silverstein. If your current relationship with them is truly that you even only sometimes give their records a single cover to cover listen anymore, that is probably more about a disconnect with you and their music than it is about the length of their albums. EP or LP, that’s not changing, just as it probably wouldn’t for those that are still listening to and loving their full LPs anyway. If that’s not true for you then idk man, that’s valid too. Neither experience is the end all be all

The second half of that post was not the part I thought might rile anybody up lol

Honestly, I’m a casual fan of Circa Survive and I don’t know if I LOVE any of their albums all the way through, so as someone who has always felt they weren’t able to keep up the momentum throughout an entire album after usually 3-4 awesome opening tracks (I know most would disagree!), this is the perfect length. It helps that this more electronic driven sound was a really awesome decision.

The other "new" songs from the Patreon essentailly make up another complementary EP that is just as interesting.

    1. Time and Place
    2. Memetic Shield
    3. How Am I Not Myself
    4. Electric Moose
    5. Bye Bye
    6. Pentagram
    7. We Forgot

Pretty awesome time. take all of these songs together and you've got a very weird but very cool makeshift LP7 totaling 13 tracks. Plus, 17 covers and 15 reworkings of older songs in this similar new style.

Absolutely nuts and definitely makes up for the 4 year gap. They are truly pumping out an unprecedented and prolific amount of music right now.
