Desert Alone should have came out as something I really liked. I remember an early version they were grooving on the verse in one of their studio vids - it was deep. That chorus bums me out when it happens. I think the BSN songs were pulled apart in ways we can’t imagine. Iirc they did 2 prepros and there was a lot of contention there with the band and the label people.
this is the only track I even listen to it’s really great. love the floaty ambient guitars that transition the chord change into the chorus.
Longest Mile Spirit of the Stairwell Dyed in the Wool Glass Arrows are my picks but I still don’t really like that album
Tracks 4-5 on BSN are straight embarrassing... even the less inspired stuff on other records isn't in the same league. Total "let's hedge for a radio hit now that we're on a major" stuff. The rest is all solid to great though. Overall really good album that still represents a significant dropoff they never fully recovered from.
I agree that Fever Dreams and Spirit of the Stairwell have never done a great deal for me. The Longest Mile finally clicked with me in like the last year or two. I guess my hottest take is that while Get Out is an objectively great song, I pretty much never have the urge to listen to it and it kinda bums me out that it gets so much attention when they have so many songs that are more interesting.
I was late on this band, but I think The Amulet is my favorite. Haven't listened through the discography in a while though, so I'll do that soon
Yeah I think I like side B more. Get Out is a top 5 track in their discog tho. I’m always amazed when I felt free or imaginary enemy is someone’s favorite song. not cuz they are bad but they are just so different from every other circa song. Colins writing vs Anthony. Clearly stripped down instrumentally. Juturna Amulet OLG Descensus BSN VW
Get Out was perfect for their major label debut. Catchy, concise, had mainstream potential... but still fundamentally Circa.
Get Out is a good song. Quality aside, instrumentally it sounded literally nothing like what Circa had previously put out at that point. Hell, it doesn’t sound much like any song they’ve put out since either.
In some ways, but ultimately it still had the swirling layered melodies, which really kick into gear during the solo. Compare that with Imaginary, which just... straight up isn't a Circa song in my book.
Pretty much everything about BSN works for me. I’d say Frozen Creek and Spirit are probably my least favorites, but I never skip or think about skipping them. My favorite could be Fever Dreams, TTDA, Dyed in the Wool... I honestly don’t know.
