Anthony is using his higher range and falsetto more on this track than most Circa songs post-OLG, so not consistently mid-range. And I just straight up don't understand how his singing could be interpreted as unenergetic. It's actually good to hear some restraint from him after a record as heavy as Descensus. I mean differing opinions are fine but I just honestly find it funny that someone would call his singing "boring" on this new song.
I actually agree, I find the vocals to be very bland and forgettable, but I look forward to hearing the rest of the album. Edit: those drums are sick tho
Anyone else think Violent Waves would have been so much better suited as a 10, maybe 9, song record? Bird Sounds is such a perfect song.
I know people don't like Phantasmagoria, but I can respect the gamble they took with it. If I could cut one song from VW it'd be My Only Friend. Just kills the flow for me.
Not sure I'd cut anything from the record. I guess Phantasmagoria, but I don't even think that song is bad. I'm just firmly in the middle with it. I wish Battle, My Love were on the album though. I have to imagine it was written during the same sessions as VW seeing as it was released just a couple months after the album. Maybe it could have replaced Phantasmagoria and fit in right between My Only Friend and Think Of Me When They Sound
Yeah, it would seem more at home on an AG solo album, but it doesn't really mess up the album or anything. I would immediately axe Blood from a Stone and maybe Brother Song. I really think My Only Friend takes them new places, just gets lost in the sauce a little bit. Also moving some of the slower songs around might help the flow without those songs.
Violent Waves would have been better served as a 5 song EP featuring the first 4 tracks and Think Of Me
Idk I especially love the back half of VW, especially tracks 7-10, although the Lottery is like a top 5 favorite Circa song of mine. Now I feel bad for dissing My Only Friend. This album needs more love.
Tbh I like every song on VW, some more than others obv but I don't think I'd take any full songs away. Maybe chop the length of a couple, if anything. Also probably unpopular but outside of Juturna, I think VW is their best "scene setting". The whole thing just has such a vibe to it
Blood From A Stone is a fantastic song on this album. It's right behind The Lottery for my favorite. I love how mellow it is and Anthony really kills it on that song lyrically and vocally
And the idea that VW would be better served as a 5-song EP featuring the first four songs and Think Of Me When They Sound is silly considering that Sharp Practice and Suitcase aren't even in the top 5 on the album
One of the most cathartic experiences I ever had was seeing that song live. I think so many people can relate to that song too - anyone who had to witness a loved one suffer from cancer or disease. It's just brutal, but the song has hope to it.
