that opener on Juturna just sets the mood for the record so well, really puts you in that headspace

I don't know what is easier to pick on Imaginary Enemy or I Felt Free. They're pretty dang cheesy in every aspect imo

@Your Milkshake I like both of those songs : ) wouldn't call neither of them a masterpiece for sure, but damn, I enjoy it still despite a few weird straightforward lines.

I love I Felt Free. My second favourite on BSN and I like it more than pretty almost anything on Juturna and anything on VW or Descensus.

OLG is easily my favourite because to me it has the best melodies in their discography while still being interesting and unique musically.

they wrote those songs because they wanted to write good songs.

They are absolutely good songs. Theyre definitely not something I normally prefer to listen to. By the time the bridge comes around on I Felt Free I shut down because it just feels so regularly done before and predictable. Maybe Im taking things too seriously. Also, I normally dont listen for lyrics or put much stock in them so Imaginary Enemy doesnt irk me there where it would for everyone else who crticize the song but they are very cheesy.

I believe Colin wrote the lyrics to both of those songs

@Transient_Hymn oh yeah I think you're right at least with I Felt Free, now I remember seeing somewhere it was actually written by Colin.

BSN is probably my favorite circa album actually, it just sounds like they really spent a lot, and i mean a LOT of time writing and perfecting those songs, and it's also the last recording i felt anthony's voice actually was soaring, and perfected (which i know he wanted a grittier approach later on) violent waves, and descensus, both sound like rushed and unpolished albums, and really could have used the better production, and the outside views of others to help with the songwriting, which they seem to have hated so much on that album, but it pushed it them to write their greatest material. don't get me wrong, the first two albums are great, and classics, but for me they took quite a while to grow on me, where BSN was instantly likable.

btw, i felt free is a great song. i'm not a huge fan of imaginary enemy though, i'd say that one is the weakest on the album. they could have picked a different single and actually filmed a proper music video, big mistake for that album cycle. i haven't seen a good single/video release from them since "the difference between..."

The thing you're saying about Ant's voice. I totally agree. Soaring is the perfect descriptor. I've been so underwhelmed with his studio performances since. Which sucks for me. I was actually really really sad when I ended up not liking what the band was doing years ago. But I've since moved on and found other music to enjoy.

On Letting Go is my favorite from them, mainly bc of the connection I have with it, but Blue Sky Noise is their most put together album in my opinion. I love the atmosphere of it and seeing them on tour to support that album was my favorite Circa Survive concert ever. Definitely my second favorite Circa album.

    White isn't right.

This is applicable to many other things, if not most things.

I was never that sad about not really enjoying their last few albums because I was never that big a fan of them, I just enjoyed OLG a fair amount. The past year or so though I've started liking that album so much more that now I am a little sad I don't enjoy their other stuff anywhere near as much.

BSN is their second best record. They refined their songwriting and I think it shows a lot of growth.

Also I adore Juturna but for the life of me can't remember how Always Getting What You Want goes unless I put it on. Completely unmemorable song imo.

AGWYW is one weak song on the entirety of Juturna. But it's far from bad. When Violent Waves and Descensus exist docking Juturna for one single song is wow.

I agree that the songwriting on BSN certainly got more structured and feels more "mature"...but I don't think that approach results in the best material for this band.

I've always enjoyed the weird "stream of conscious" structure of the early stuff.

Well I mean Juturna is one of my favorite albums ever, I love pretty much every song except that one. I was just glad to see others with a similar opinion. I probably enjoy everything on VW and Descensus more than that song. It's not bad, on a lesser bands album it might be a standout, but it pales compared to the rest of the record.

The soaring clean vocals are also a major draw of the early records for me.

But the way I hear it, the transition to "grittier" vocals *clearly* happened on BSN, not after it. The vocals on OLG and BSN are worlds apart.
