Great lineup but I hate festivals. Would selfishly take a tour of like all those bands or four. But I’m happy for everyone involved.
Colin was on the That’s Fair podcast today: “Colin, Circa Survive is a band, true or false? Ooh. TBD? I mean, we are a band. We are a band that existed and also have shows on the docket. So I guess in some sense, we exist. But I think in the philosophical sense of like, or no, the more logistical sense, like are we an active band? I don't know. I think the whole point of a lot of what we're doing is mostly trying to figure that out and testing waters and just sort of doing what seems like would be fun and fulfilling and starting there and to see where things go.” From The New Scene: That's Fair Podcast - Episode 6 Preview: Colin Frangicetto of Circa Survive, Apr 15, 2026 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-new-scene/id1501761301?i=1000761572966&r=1073
The quality of 2000s emo record like 20 years later varies wildly, so it is CRAZY how Juturna is still one of the best records I think I've ever heard lol. The mood, Anthony's voice, it's all just untouchable
My favourite thing about Circa is the guitar parts still make no sense to me. I try to play them even now and I still don’t know what the fuck is going on. The duelling guitars and layers still hold up every bit as much as they did 20 years ago.
I got the OLG tab book for Christmas, and what threw me off for years, and that the book finally revealed to me, is Brendan played a half step down and Colin played a full step down. And then the mix pans the guitars around. So it’s just wild it all works so beautifully lol
Didn't they do some type or crazy recording where they didn't listen to each others guitar parts when recording?
Was this Circa or was this TSOAF? I definitely think there was something around TSOAF not hearing each others' parts for Lover while recording individual pieces, but I would believe it with Circa too. I would love to have stems of Circa stuff to dive into.
I've said this on here before but Brian Mcternan is the secret sauce of those first 2 records. Obviously all the demos are cool and interesting from a composition standpoint (especially something like glorious nosebleed which is pretty much fully baked in demo form), but on the patreon podcast interview with Brian Mcternan they are all very candid about how under baked the demo material was going into saladdays. To the extent that equalvision didn't really know or ask or warn mcternan ahead of time of just how much reworking needed to be done, and it was a pretty tough and formative recording experience for everyone involved. The not knowing each other's guitar parts ahead of time was not by design, but more a function of writing individually with Brian for each members tracking. Just reworking over and over everything. It's all very cool to me, quite literally juturna just can't be replicated.
McTernan is a GOAT to me though. Those two Circa records, Balance and Composure's Separation, Fireworks' Gospel and Oh Common Life, and The Graduate's Anhedonia and Only Every Time.
I think what I like about Juturna the most, is that somehow without it sounding overdone, it's absolutely crazy what the guitars are doing and the complete left / right split in the mix is amazing. I've spent hours relistening to it, sometimes a whole song with just left sound, and then right, and the guitars are just both unhinged with no real rhythm and lead at times. Yet somehow, it all works without being chaotic. On letting go was the same, then after that, it just changed a little. They still do great things on guitar, but not like Juturna for me.
This is part of the reason why Amulet worked so well for me, it felt like the dual guitars were doing similar things to those first two albums.
I think he retired from producing and closed his studio a few years back? It's been a while so I'm not sure
I'm selling this copy. Let me know if you are interested. I'd do discog price minus 5 and free shipping. Circa Survive – Juturna – Vinyl (Red, w/White, & Blue Splatter, LP, Album + 3 more), 2024 [r29632051] | Discogs
A live album release of these upcoming philly shows would be cool too. They should close the sets with buzzhenge. It goes off and in live form would probably sound more like your friends are gone
