when i put this on i thought "well this is definitely a new circa survive record" but the second half is really opening up to me
My Only Friend is super OLG and the whole thing rules. Idk how someone could say VW HE is the least inspired, that's clearly BSN in my mind. Sure, most of it is great and they sell it. But maybe 25 percent feels kinda passionless
It seems like harmonies are used much more tastefully here. They aren't just Anthony singing the same note an octive higher/lower like he's done a lot in the past. Those high notes in the "chorus" of At Night It Gets Worse are otherworldly. That song is definitely the centerpiece of the album.
This album is really really good. It's been really slow to really capture me (OLG was the same way), but every listen I enjoy it more.
I almost told you the other day, while you were waiting for release day, that you might not like it a whole lot based on how you feel about the rest of their discog. But I didn't have the heart lol.
Registered to BSN on my drive today. The back half is really good. We’ve talked about felt free and enemy a lot so won’t beat a dead horse. But the first 3 tracks are really interesting. There are really cool Circa moments throughout each but they are reserved. Like the songs explode in sections but then settle down into something simpler/poppy. The back half feels like it had a lot less pop influence tinkering.
The thing with this album is that it didn’t really hit me till like my 15th listen or so I think it’s their best album since Juturna and would rank it as such
I'm not even slightly disgruntled to see what's now been a fair several people in here ranking it at the top above OLG, even if I wouldn't personally go so far. Brings me extreme joy to enjoy another one of their records so much. It's magic and I'm too old to believe in magic. Really looking forward to your review now.
It’ll be different for every one - I guess I currently have a unique perspective on this since I’ve been listening to this record since early July
I'm absolutely loving it. I've waited 10 years for this basically. The creativity and maturity/restraint is going to give the album really long legs. At Night It Gets Worse is a song I have always wanted from them. This album is my Science Fiction to give context to everyone on this board who didn't pick up on that yet, except for I had to wait even longer
first three tracks on blue sky noise is basically my favorite run of circa tracks, i love all of those songs so much, they set up this gorgeous but kind of harrowing aura of mystery (i also like "i felt free" a lot)
What did I say about their discography? They're my favorite band so I'm curious what I said to make it seem I wouldn't like this. I say some dumb shit
I don’t disagree on the song structureof Frozen. But even though it is written like a pop song, the guitars don’t play out like a pop song. Where something like spirit has a pretty simple riff playing through the verses. Gets a little more interesting in the chorus. Then they really explode at the end. I guess I think circa songs have always been more interesting when the music might all be going in one direction and then one of the guitarists plays something that seems completely off the wall but it works. BSN overall feels like it has moments of that. But they are more careful when they let it out. Songs like through the desert fever dreams seem much closer to the rest of their discog with how they are structured and layered for the entirety of the song.
They were so good when I saw them live. Enjoy. I missed fixing though. Still peeves. Venue posted the wrong doors open time.
