All about that blood from a stone. Tell yourself it’s a top 5 circa song when you listen to it and you might believe me :)
On BSN it feels like they weren't allowed to be themselves for any more than 50% of a track. Even an otherwise creative track like Through the Desert is plagued by a chorus that sounds like anybody could have written it, employing post grunge sensibilities that sound dated to put it lightly. Imaginary Enemy is probably one of the more successful tracks altogether because it sounds like Circa being creative Circa but also being poppier, which I presume was the point. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocal melodies personally. That's my dickhead post for the next 6 months.
Through the deserts chorus couldn't be written by anyone.. trust me, if it could I would write it and make money. Writing pop music is HARD, I don't care what anyone says, to write a chorus that catchy is not easy and shows how talented this band is. Also I'm on suitcase on my run and I love that song, such a different song from anything they had done up to that point
Well only Anthony could do those vocals. We know that. I feel like that's what you're referencing here. and anyone=other bands, not me or you
Vocal performance aside the melody really grabs a hold of you, it's easy to digest but still feels really powerful. It's hard to write a melody that does that. I also think people were spooked bc of the modulation to major in that chorus ha.
Hey I'm in another band! Haha. Seriously brah check us out. You'll hate us, we are way too "generic" for your taste I think. Outofservice.bandcamp.com
I think the production for violent waves really works. Wait was this remastered when it was picked up by the label?
BSN just sounds cleaner to me, musically it's not much different from the albums after, I wish they had a few more hooks that big actually. Amulet is a nice album but lacks an actually catchy chorus.
hmm, i think i disagree with this. the melodies dont hit you right in the face like BSN, but they are there. the chorus of Never Tell a Soul is the main example.
I bet I won't hate it. What is it? For some reason I just have a hard time when a band tries to abruptly mix something that's not alt rock with something that is alt rock. It's tacky imo and it feels like when a good movie breaks your suspension of disbelief. I like some straight up alt rock. Daisy and Citizen are a Jam.
important update: i just found out he's saying "It's a surprise you haven't caught on yet" instead of what I've always though was "It's a surprise you havent come yet." ... yeah. I'm really glad i was wrong on that one.
Probably a mix of emo/alt rock/ post hardcore. I think our full length that comes out next year will have a different sound. I'm not a huge fan of genre tags. I have a masters degree on classical guitar and there's that sort of finger style hidden in the music, most people just ended up thinking it was overdubbed guitars haha. Anyway if you do decide to check it out, thank you, if not no worries!
Yeah that's kinda my deal with that album too. Even if they had 100% creative control and all the illfitting pop/alt rock things were their ideas, it still sounds out of place and forced to me. They definitely learned from it i think because VW has huge moments surrounded by awesome atmosphere. Jeez, I actually dont know, I have the OG CD and the OG vinyl, I love how its mastered so I hope not.
I've heard this album five times now I think, I have no idea what that chorus is off hand. It's like purposely not catchy, this album has a lot of strong grooves and complicated lyrics in the chorus, it's not trying to be hook heavy at all.
Also I love "I Felt Free" even though the chorus is a little too straight forward. It can get grating at times.. The second half of BSN has always kind of lost me a bit but the first half is basically perfect
