Over the course of the three months I’ve had this record it has grown considerably on me - it’s a dense complex grower for sure
I love when AG slows it down and goes into his falsetto. Also inherently violent is my favorite lyric for unknown reasons.
"The Amulet" music video was shot in Fargo North Dakota on this last co-headlining tour with AFI. On a day off we discovered that there was a fireworks convention giving displays of their newest and coolest products and I turn to our videographer Hank Ford and suggested that we bring a camera and shoot some fun looking shit DIY style. Had no idea what we were doing and we were kind of making it up as we went along. Hank really pulled it all together perfectly and now we have this cool little snapshot of a magical moment we shared on tour. The song itself was written in the midst of suicidal frenzy and it brought me tremendous relief writing it and now it's yours to share. - Anthony
Anthony and I talked about the album’s overarching theme a lot in the interview so you’ll get some insight next week
Oddly, it seems like most here are really down on it, even considering it to be their worst-produced album. I think it's probably the best, overall, but still not that great. It's very airy and breathes (read: isn't super compressed) better than the others; although, by the same token, the heavier moments tend to lack the "big" sound they deserve. In terms of the mix, BSN is head and shoulders above all the others, but the mastering is horrid and damn near ruins the album for me. I would've liked to see them work with Kris Crummett at some point in their career. I know not everyone loves him, either, but IMO he's consistently done this genre better than anyone Circa have actually gone with.
i think the production on this album is a big step up from the last two. BSN is easily the best, and the first two are really good but not quite dynamic enough sometimes. i dunno why this isn't liked though, i think it sounds really good so far. the guitars in the amulet sound really cool. the song is pretty good but hasn't blown me away quite yet, all of these new ones have needed time to grow though. stoked to hear it all in context!
maybe i should be clear and say i do really like this album and ive listened to it quite a few times now, spoiler alert my review is going to be real positive, its just not quite the direction i saw them heading after Descensus. maybe Drews interview will give more insight but for me this feels much more like a lyrical progression than sonic. which is fine because Anthony is a great lyrics so him progressing only enhances the album. the biggest shock to me is how catchy and kinda rock-ish a lot of the middle section is. i dig it
I was hoping for something a bit more ambient and weird but have loved two of the singles and liked one. Don't think this is gonna disappoint. But love how Anthony writes so will prob fall in love with a few lyrics. Like always.
yeah, i've never been disappointed with Anthony's lyrics. New song gave me a little bit of Juturna vibes. But overall I was a little underwhelmed by it. Gonna have to let it grow on me.
Yeah, I'd agree with most of this, and if it's a choice between letting the songs breathe and compressing the hell out of them, this band definitely needs the breathing room.
almost every circa album has subpar production. the best is probably OLG, one of three mcternan albums i think has good production. the other two are the two graduate albums.
