Honestly Violent Waves has chunks of several songs that sound great the way that On Letting Go did but then other parts of those same tracks bring them right back down. My Only Friends verse is straight OLG but I hate the rest of the song. Some of Lottery, Bird Sounds, Blood From A Stone also sound OLG. And Hitman is similarly a pretty good track.
What a seriously underwhelming track to throw out as a first single and our only taste of that album for like 2 months.
The Lottery is the only Violent Waves song I would add to a less than 20 song Circa essential playlist.
I don't know. Violent Waves is my least favorite Circa album, but it still has some great songs. The Lottery, Birth of the Economic Hitman, I'll Find A Way, and Bird Sounds are damn good Circa Survive songs, just to name a few.
VW is my least favorite but its still a good rock solid album. All of the songs have at least one great moment or idea that makes them worthwhile but yeah some of the songs have moments or sections that are just lacking or downright bland.
If you're doing an essential playlist you'd have to take like three from each album, and then do some b sides
VW has the only Circa song I can barely even say I like, which is Think Of Me When They Sound. I'm also not in love with Phantasmagoria and Blood From A Stone. Honestly though, I think the biggest thing holding me back from truly adoring VW like I do their other records is just that it came out in a very weird, dark period of my life, and is inextricable from those memories for me. It's a little easier to listen now, quite a few years removed, but I'll still never be able to totally shake it.
since everyones a fan of lists, lets do this thing. Act Appalled Wish Resign In Fear and Faith Living Together The Difference... Your Friends are Gone 1,000 Witnesses Get Out Through the Desert Alone Compendium + Dyed in the Wool (cheating) Lazarus The Lottery Bird Sounds I'll Find A Way Child of the Desert Nesting Dolls Sovereign Circle 3 from each album + 2 b sides. OLG and Descensus were the hardest ones to decide for me, and i deviated to what seem to be the more well liked songs on VW since im still not that into it.
Ugh okay because I love nothing more than an arbitrary list and cannot help myself, here is my "essentials" list with 3 songs from each album and 2 b-sides. Keep in mind this is meant to reflect the best songs to introduce someone to the band, not necessarily my personal favorites. Act Appalled In Fear and Faith Stop the Fuckin Car Living Together The Difference Between... The Greatest Lie Get Out Through The Desert Alone Glass Arrows Sharp Practice The Lottery Suitcase Schema Only The Sun Nesting Dolls The Most Dangerous Commercials House of Leaves I guess. Tried to include the songs that hooked me when I first found the band, along with some I would consider their more "impressive" moments.
Holding Someone's Hair Back In Fear and Faith The Great Golden Baby Living Together Semi Constructive Criticism Your Friends Are Gone Glass Arrows Frozen Creek The Longest Mile Sharp Practice The Lottery Think Of Me When They Sound Child of the Desert Always Begin Phantom Lazarus 1,000 Witnesses
Act appalled In fear and faith We're all thieves Living together In the morning and amazing The difference between Get out Glass arrows Imaginary enemy Suitcase Lottery Bird sounds Schema Quiet down Sovereign circle Lazarus Battle, my love I love battle so so much
I would consider it a B-Side, it's not part of an album or anything. Anyways making that list made me realize that I think Phantom is Circa's most underrated song
Wish Resign drums are amazing, possibly my favorite off Juturna. I think it is, since that EP is basically a compilation of b sides, that one being an outtake from BSN.

I don't do lists BUT Circa Juturna In Fear & Faith (#1 for me. Still gives me chills over 10 years later) Stop The Fucking Car The Great Golden Baby (does anyone remember when this song came out originally and was called Juturna?) On Letting Go Living Together Close Your Eyes To See The Difference Between.. Special mention to Your Friends Are Gone Blue Sky Noise Glass Arrows (when that bass tears in, its incredible) Fever Dreams (when the drums come at around 3:00 after the break.. just fucking out of this world - everything happening with Anthony's vocals, the understated guitar, just ugh, so good) Through The Desert Alone Violent Waves Bird Sounds Think of Me When They Sound I'll Find A Way Descensus Nesting Dolls (so glad they're using this song so well live at the moment, it's awesome) Child Of The Desert Only The Sun (3:00 onwards makes it) B Sides/Bonus/EPs House Of Leaves (if In Fear & Faith is my #1, this is #2 - this song creates an atmosphere like no other) Backmask
