This. I was just telling a friend that while it's not terrifying per se (the movie proper, scenes, imagery, moments in the film, etc.), it is terrifying thematically when you allow yourself to get lost in/dwell on the content. All of the purgatory and heaven/hell/afterlife issues aside, having war, military conspiracy, PTSD, and mental health struggles thrown on top make for a rough ride. I also always forget that Macauley Culkin and Jason Alexander are in this haha.
Just finished. It's rare that I go into a movie these days as blind as I went into this, I usually know for better or worse what I'm getting into, but I'd really just heard the name and knew nothing about the plot and that was a nice change. This one will stick with me for a while. It felt like a more posh version of '80s Cronenberg, I kept thinking about The Dead Zone while watching it. A killer supporting cast and I liked seeing Elizabeth Pena second billed. I always loved her in Rush Hour and it was cool to see her in a real role. But yeah, I agree, this is legit terrifying without being "scary". I don't know how many times I'll revisit it, but I'll think about it often.
I am not usually horny on this site, but I would probably volunteer to live in Hell if Elizabeth Pena was my girlfriend. (Also, she's great in this.) Yes!
Okay cool. I'm gonna try and pick something worthy but that is also available on streaming. Do folks in here have Shudder?
True. Gotta be honest, right now i’m leaning towards something that isn’t even on Shudder. Trying to find a good balance of easily available and not too weird or off the rails.
Okay folks, I've decided to keep it a bit more conventional for my first pick (I have some others lined up for next time that go a bit harder/weirder). My pick is Paul W.S. Anderson's Event Horizon from 1997. Synopsis below: When the Event Horizon, a spacecraft that vanished years earlier, suddenly reappears, a team is dispatched to investigate the ship. Accompanied by the Event Horizon's creator, William Weir (Sam Neill), the crew of the Lewis and Clark, led by Capt. Miller (Laurence Fishburne), begins to explore the seemingly abandoned vessel. However, it soon becomes evident that something sinister resides in its corridors, and that the horrors that befell the Event Horizon's previous journey are still present. Currently streaming on Prime and Paramount+. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a surprising treat. If you have seen it before, this upcoming week is a good time to revisit! It is such a uniquely dark and twisted sci-fi horror film and it still makes me wish that Anderson continued doing more stuff like this instead of video game adaptations.
Great pick! Just rewatched it a few months ago! Such a gnarly combination of like, Hellraiser, The Shining, and Alien. The studio interfered because they knew his vision was too powerful. Recently tried to watch Pandorum because I've been doing a lot of aliensploitation movies lately and it just wasn't the same.
I've never seen it and heard awesome, awesome things about it. Been trying educate myself on the wide range of horror and this has been on the backburner - excited to have a reason to bring it to the forefront!
This was good! Certain aspects are dated (Cooper, some of the slo-mo, etc) and I would love for it to have gone into it further, which seems to be result of studio interference, but overall the tone and themes were sick. Feels like it would be a great candidate for a Evil Dead (2013) style reboot imo
Loved this. Had watched it when it came out and didn't like it, then caught the last half on TV a while later and was really into it, but haven't seen it since. CGI was bad, but the sets looked great. I hadn't seen Hellraiser the last time I watched, so I'm just picking up on all the influences, so much so that basically everything in the ship is stylized like the lament configuration.
Cooper is just straight cringeworthy through and through haha. Not necessarily asking for a reboot/remake/requel but if Alvarez showed interest, I wouldn't be mad about it so I agree there.
Yeah, the core looking similar to the lament configuration, DJ's death is kinda blood eagle, but also kinda looks like a Cenobite strung him up with chains, and there is even a line "I have such wonderful things to show you"
