Wow, I did NOT remember how bonkers this movie is for an early-80s slasher lol. So glad I'm rewatching it!
Got halfway through it last night. Really enjoying it so far. Love the mystique around Virginia's character so far. Also, it's kinda playing like a giallo a little bit? Excited to finish it. So weird to see a slasher from this time period with this length.
Black gloves in the very first scene, the whole thing feels very European between that and the university setting
Yoooo actually really dug HBTM. The reveal was surprisingly Scream-esque? At least in the main motivation.
Thank you for the induction! 1 horror a week may be too much and I did not care for Jacob's Ladder. I will watch Happy Birthday to Me and report back.
Yeah Happy Birthday to Me was absolutely overlong and in need of an editor but it also took some huge swings for an early-80s slasher, lots of fun! Great pick. Agreed on the proto-Scream reveal.
Picking a classic, House (1977) We're having a movie night next week to watch it with some friends, always a great rewatch even if you've seen it. And a must see if you haven't.
Just watched it a couple months ago but absolutely agreed on it being a great rewatch. Curious to hear from any who have not experienced it cause it is certainly a trip
Also I dare anyone who watches it to not fall in love with or at the very least get the main piano theme stuck in your head. GD its so good
it’s wild to think the director wrote that script with his very young daughter but it makes sense the more you really think about it
HBtM - Too long, too slow, the most ADR ive ever seen, every scene the characters felt like they were in a competetion to explain what was happening. The camera was always having fun. Transitioning from prom the camera pans up from behind the couch to curly kicking his heels next to the fireplace, love it. There was another one at the soccer field where the boy just walks into the camera, pretty ominious. The stock funk music during the wardrobe strip!! Best kill obviously goes to the gym scene 5 stars no notes, they made a point to shoot the killer moving the rack so they couldnt put the bar down but with no rack you're free to drop bar over your head????? that sounded like a note but it wasnt I wouldnt change a thing. I wish there were more mum flash backs or we atleast got to her faster, she ruled. the last 20mins turn up the crazy and the pace (thanks mum). Ending was perfect, fantastic death stall exposition monologue topped with the cherry of ADR happy birthday.
Shockingly, I appreciated but struggled with House on first watch (picked up the Criterion), so we'll see how it goes on second watch.
Ok, finally trying to start up with this now. Been clean for a few weeks and trying to find all the distractions I can while reigniting my interests. Which day is the due date and when is a new film selected? Definitely going to check out Happy Birthday and House, two blind spots.
