The film I have been most looking forward to watching, The Stepford Wives, explores themes of gender roles and the loss of individuality. It effectively taps into the fears and anxieties surrounding societal pressures on women to conform. The Stepford wives are portrayed as docile figures, reflecting the dangers of suppressing individuality in pursuit of an idealized image. Katharine Ross delivers an outstanding performance as Joanna, capturing her journey from skepticism to fear and desperation. She becomes a reliable anchor amidst the unsettling events in Stepford.

The movie successfully creates an eerie atmosphere, building tension towards a climactic conclusion. While it may have some predictable moments, The Stepford Wives remains a relevant piece of work that sparks important discussions around feminism and the importance of maintaining autonomy.

Party Girl is as '90s Sundance as you can possibly get. Holy timecapsule (and in some bad ways slur-wise, of course). Parker Posey is just fantastic from top to bottom though. You really see why she was the indie queen. She pulls off the stylized stiffness with more warmth than the rest of the cast and lands every joke they give her.

It occurred to me how matter-of-factly a cast with drag queens, gay characters, a diverse mix of ethnicities, etc. are presented 20 years ago, where now there'd be a small army calling it "woke" and trying to ban its existence. We've backslid so much.

Also, I've always harbored a secret dream to work in a library when I'm older and retire from teaching, so that whole angle hooked me, too.

    Cool pick.

Party Girl ruled. So funny, so hip for the time. Parker Posey is a top 3 comedic actress of all time in my opinion. Daisy Von Scherler Mayer actually just directed the last Yellowjackets episode I watched so it's cool she's still at it.

Just finished Party Girl, very fun, the fashion was the highlight for me.

I disagree with the idea of using party girl as proof we are backsliding. Here we see an example of a very diverse and queer community existing underground, the backlash today is that its moving from that contained space into the mainstream culture.

I’m going with George Roy Hill’s film adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five.

Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors and I didn’t even know there was an adaptation of this until a a year or so ago. It strikes me as an extremely difficult novel to adapt to screen, so I’m going to be interested to see how it turned out.

I’ve seen it up for rent at $3.99 most places (and available through other means).

I'm actually fairly close to having seen Hill's whole career, so that's a fun pick. Worth paying a couple bucks.

Im going to read SH5 before I watch the film, ill try and get both done in the next few weeks.

Finished reading Cockfighter today. There are so many amazing and funny sentences in the book, and we miss franks horrid yet laughable self justifications which go on to twist themes silimar to Cormac McCathy's All The Pretty Horses on keeping ones word, betrayal, luck and fairness it digs into the character much further than the film.

I think the film was a great adpation just not the medium to fully capture that aspect of the story. Ive been thinking about toxic cultures and how they are portrayed by fans/followers and how they are defended, how interesting it is that the very worst part of cockfighting is the cockfighting. Right to its core theres nothing to defend and all the same virtues and mythologies are poured over it.

Check out the Hoke Moseley series if you like Willeford's writing. They've been my favorites of his so far.

Slaughterhouse-Five was a worthy adaptation of the book. It's definitely hard to capture the time-jumping and some of the more bizarre sci-fi aspects, but it did as good of a job as you could reasonably expect. The editing, and match cutting in particular, really helped draw a line between the trauma of war to Billy Pilgrim's detached behavior.

Two things I found really effective were the framing of Dresden pre-bombing and Billy's relationship with his dog. Hill really put an effort into showing the beauty of the architecture and vibrance of the city, particularly its youth, making it all the more tragic when it's completely leveled. The shots of children playing in masks right before the bombing was an effective touch as well.

I don't recall the dog getting as much time in the book, so I found that interesting. Billy isn't really interested in any of the humans around him, just this simple creature who is unaware of war or any of the issues humans inflict upon themselves.

  16. Ok! I finally was able to find a movie that I have been wanting to watch that is also available on one of the main streaming services.

Summer is starting and when I was younger, my friends and I loved watching 90s/early 00s action movies during the day when it was too hot to ride our bikes. I always feel nostalgic around this time of year, so I have decided to pick one that I barely remember at all because I haven't seen it since I was in junior high a million years ago, sooooo:

    BAD BOYS (1995)
    Directed by Michael fuckin Bay
    (Available for free on Hulu)

"Marcus Burnett is a hen-pecked family man. Mike Lowry is a foot-loose and fancy free ladies' man. Both are Miami policemen, and both have 72 hours to reclaim a consignment of drugs stolen from under their station's nose. To complicate matters, in order to get the assistance of the sole witness to a murder, they have to pretend to be each other."

(I'm not sure if I pick who's on deck, or if someone else does? I don't know who still needs a turn, so help a bad boy out?)

Ok so my selection is Meek's Cutoff (2010). Directed by Kelly Reichardt and starring Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, and Bruce Greenwood.

"The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival."

It is available on Hulu, rental on amazon, and also completely uploaded on youtube by some guy.
