I don't know if I can sit through Scott Pilgrim again. The Cornetto films, particularly Hot Fuzz, are so funny and a perfect blend of winking mockery and genre sincerity, but since then Wright has been a miss three times in a row.

Not that there was ever much glamour in cockfighting, but I think the film deliberately makes it as unglamorous and grubby as possible. It doesn't feel like some ancient practice, with hidden wisdom to be a prize cockfighter. Frank (and all others around him) don't really have a clue what they're doing, and any attempt to show that there's a bit of strategy (Frank clipping the bird's beak with a blade at the start of the film, for example), ultimately is pointless. We as the viewers never have any idea about what makes a good fighting cock, and seemingly neither do the characters.

There's that brief montage near the end with Frank "training" the birds, but overall it comes across as a random, violent and completely unskilled or undisciplined subculture.

I'm not technically part of this, but I recently re-watched Scott Pilgrim in a packed theater and it was very very fun. There's some problematic elements but I think that's the nature of the comic being from an era of the 2000s. As far as movies go, I wish that more had the energy that Scott Pilgrim does.

Weird choice imo to pick this kinda movie for the third one, lol, especially when the one picking didn't like it at the time and no one else seems excited by the pick. I personally think it's really fun and don't mind revisiting it, though. From what I recall, it's one of the most interesting examples of adapting comic storytelling into the medium of film, alongside the likes of Into the Spider-Verse and Ang Lee's Hulk.

I thought the whole point was to visit kind of random ish movies or get people to watch something they wouldn’t currently go out of their way to watch. It’s been 13 years since I’ve seen it and I would say my tastes are almost completely different.

Doesn’t have to be the pick. Someone else can feel free to suggest something.

It is an acceptable pick. It might seem like a really big movie around here, but it was not a huge success. I feel old realizing how long it has been.

My memories of Scott Pilgrim make me think of Everything Everywhere All at Once. They both had that kind of energy.

To be clear, “weird” doesn’t necessarily mean “bad” to me. I get where you’re coming from, and I’m personally down to revisit the film. Guess the vibe just felt different from what I expected checking the thread this morning. Hopefully enough people participate for some decent conversation throughout the week!

You made us all watch real cockfighting and didn't even watch it yourself?

Ive watched Scott Pilgram again and learnt nothing. We just dont think the same things are cool and trying to be cool was all this had to offer, that in combination with an over reliance on refrencing and too much ironic bad dialogue made for a bad time. This must be what people who hate Tarantino feel like.

I suspect (didnt read the series) It suffered greatly switching formats to single film and trying to cram too much in, the story wants to be episodic and here it feels rushed and way too long at the same time. I had completely checkouted out by half way and skipped through the last 4-5 fight scenes.

There were some really good performances, I didnt know who Aubrey Plaza or Brie Larson were when I first saw it so that was cool.

I painted Kubric on the weekend

    While I'm not sure if I'll fit in Scott Pilgrim this week (not ruling it out!), I did re-watch the "Every Frame a Painting" little video essay on Edgar Wright and visual comedy, which I think is a really crisp video, partly covering what makes the Cornetto films so much fun to watch and re-watch;

Hm. I was overthinking my pick and between a few options, but I’m gonna go with:

    The Stepford Wives (1975)

It’s one of those iconic stories that gets referenced endlessly, and a blind spot for me, so what the heck, why not.

I did rewatch Scott Pilgram. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. It’s impressive how famous the cast is now. A lot of it was goofy ish but overall I actually enjoyed my time watching it. Maybe I’m biased cause I enjoy Michael Cera in everything. Very weird seeing Kieran Culkin not playing Roman Roy lol. Expected a few fuck offs.

Interesting pick. I watched the remake with my mom when I was like 14 and don’t remember a thing about that one.

any idea where that one is streaming?

I rewatched a lot of Scott Pilgrim scenes, but didn't have a chance to rewatch the whole thing. I feel the same way I did when it came out: it's a lot of fun as a genre exercise and visually inventive.

I'm curious about this one. Its reputation doesn't seem to match its cultural familiarity, but Bryan Forbes was an interesting director and William Goldman is a legend, so maybe it will be a nice surprise.
