Oh nice. I had added this album to my list to check out not to long ago so now I have more of a reason to give it a spin.
Yeah, this was cool. Kind of with Spo where the more classic-rock leaning stuff is whatever, but I really enjoyed Car Seat, Toes Across the Floor, and the weirdness of Wilt. I'll definitely be returning to certain tracks from this, if not the full record. Might spin their debut now.
Enjoyed the first spin of Soup. I was trying to avoid the Led Zeppelin comparisons others have made… but it’s hard too haha. There are some songs where it leans a little too far into that influence for its own good (St. Andrew’s Fall, New Life), but I think overall they blend it really well that 90’s grunge/alt rock sound (2x4 being a great example where it seems to blend seamlessly by the end). Mouthful of Cavities is also a standout.
I will be alone in saying the Zeppelin influence works for me. It’s a much more interesting direction considering what was popular at the time.
Getting caught up on this thread and wanted to post some thoughts. I thought the Lizzy Descloux album was cool and interesting, but I don't know that I'll necessarily go back to it. Very neat musical compositions and musical influences that I don't typically gravitate to or seek out on my own. Listened to Sketches of Spain after checking back in on the thread this morning. Echoing a lot of people's thoughts that this doesn't come across right away as an album from Miles and really does have those soundtrack vibes throughout. I could practically picture a movie playing out in certain parts. I have this on vinyl, but haven't listened to it more than a handful of times. Solid pick and was good to play through it beginning to end. I'm about halfway through Kings & Queens and liking what I've heard so far. Looking forward to checking out the Blind Melon record! I remember that cover and hearing good things about it before. My older brother had the CD copy of the Self Titled with No Rain on it, but don't think I really know them much except for that main single.
Gave Blind Melon a listen yesterday. Not too bad, not too bad. Not sure it's something i'd return to that often, but definitely didn't mind it.
Kings & Queens was fun! I liked his use of hip hop elements the most; it's very eclectic, which i enjoyed. I'd probably have been way more into this if I heard it when it came out. The aggressive parts remind me of more current artists SOFTPLAY and Joey Valence & Brae, which are two artists who have some killer singles I'm a big fan of. Was going into Blind Melon with a bit of high expectations. It didn't blow my mind, but i really dig this as well. I definitely hear the Zeppelin riffs and vocal styles throughout that people are talking about and like to think i would have made that impression on my own as well, but we'll never know at this point now will we? I think I've listened to the beginning of Toes Across the Floor 5+ times since last night. The dynamics, unique vocal melody, and riffs in that beginning build up is chef's kiss!
Liked this one a lot. The Zeppelin and other ’70s influences really shine like everyone else has said. Not at all what I expected since I only knew “No Rain.” Really dark album lyrically, and especially tragic coming out only a couple months before Shannon Hoon’s death. “St. Andrew’s Fall” really jumps out with that awesome speeding up section and the strings at the end. Great pick - it's always cool to discover a gem from a band I had considered a one-hit wonder.
Liking only a single song by them? I have heard No Rain hundreds of times in my life, I love it. I have heard every other song by them less than 3 times
It’s a cool encapsulation of a musician making it big. Plus, I love SOV movies from the 90s anyway and this is an excellent time capsule
Blind Melon album was cool, I liked the opening track the most. I’m not a classic rock guy so the tracks that leaned into that sound didn’t stand out as much to me. Definitely going to check out other albums as I’ve heard some great things about them (in here and from other places on the internet lol)
I just realized why “Mouthful of Cavities” sounds so familiar. The Used borrowed the line “haven’t seen him smile in a little while”for the chorus of “Sound Effects and Overdramatics”.
I was trying to study yesterday with this on in the background, but had to turn it off because I was getting to into it to focus lol. I liked it on first listen but it’s really grown on me. The 70’s influence gives it a much more fresh take for the era. The opener is such a jam.
Stuck between an album I dig but most people haven’t listened to, or an album I haven’t heard from my 2026 to listen playlist
