just to let you know: most of the people who didn't like your choice haven't really liked much else either
I’m just happy people are engaging in discussion. I enjoy sharing obscure things and don’t mind if it’s not for everyone. It’s enough for me to share a French album from the 80s and people won’t immediately dismiss it because it’s different
It’s fine not to like things! A big part of the fun of this thread is listening to stuff I probably wouldn’t seek out or find otherwise. Not everything is gonna be for everyone. As long as people explain why something doesn’t click with them and aren’t just like “this is bad”, it makes for a more engaging thread.
Yeah, also maybe someone can enjoy aspects of an album but not the whole thing—and this opened their mind to trying it again after we’ve discussed, or trying something in the same sphere of influence. Or they hated it, but at least they tried it and got a taste of a different genre/culture/era. Maybe giving this album a chance will change some minds about 80s or international music—how a lot of it actually rules and can actually sound current. Or maybe not and it reaffirmed their own specific interests. Either way, I didn’t make the album myself so why would I be offended if someone didn’t dig it? It’s their loss
Second listen and a few more tracks clicked with me, particularly the “calmer” tracks for a lack of a better word. Five Trouble Mambo is a really great understated track that helps ground things after the all out start to the record. I really the instruments all have this constrained quality like they are waiting to explode, but need to keep quiet. It has a fun, playful kind of tension to it. Maita takes me to a Parisian cafe if I close my eyes. Sun is Shining and Corpo Molli Pau Duro couple for a close that soothe like a night cap. Overall, I still have a few tracks that are skips for me, but I’ve ended up liking more than I dislike. Solid record and I’ll probably explore more from Lizzy.
glad it's clicking more for you. all her albums are actually pretty different so maybe you just have a diff fav Lizzy album!
I had a good time with this record, there are A LOT of disparate influences happening here and they're being combined in interesting ways and it works most of the time for me. There's a certain je ne sais quoi to the production that does make it sound 80s but barring that you could've told me these songs were written significantly later and coulda convinced me.
thanks for listening! I actually haven't listened to the remaster weirdly enough, but depending on how it sounds that may or may not resolve the production quirk for you?
I'll have to check it out! tbh I have no issue with it sounding like it's from the 80s, it's kinda endearing in a way.
That’s how I feel about it and probably why I never felt the need to check the remaster. But now I’m just curious lol. I’ll report back
I prefer the original. Something about the remaster makes it sound deflated. I’m not an expert in that stuff to explain why though
reminder to @Long Century that tomorrow (tuesday) is your turn. looking forward to whatever you share with us!
My pick is Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis. Davis teams up with composer and arranger Gil Evans for an album of Spanish folk songs. Does it still count as jazz I dont know, it is an enchanting and hypnotic album I come back to time and time again. Youtube Music Spotify Apple
Great fucking album. I usually opt for later/weird Miles but this one is undeniable. Hyped to revisit
Also thanks to everyone who listened and engaged in discussion for the Lizzy album last week. Appreciate you all giving it a shot, even those who didn’t connect with it. For any new peeps: if you missed a previous album of the week, you’re welcome and encouraged to listen back and still share your thoughts—even if it’s a week (or more) late. Just setting the precedent now.
