Just finished the Chick Corea album. I enjoyed it a bit. Maybe wasn’t in the right headspace for it. Jazz is hit or miss with me. As always though it was nice to listen to something I hadn’t listened to before. I think the problem with me is that sometimes the jazz albums are so long and I try to listen to so much music that I don’t really have the time to go back and relisten to it so it’s always just however I’m feeling the first time I hear it determines my feelings on it forever maybe. That’s on me though….rambling done
Have only listened to Now He Sings... once and fairly recently, but I remember it being very good. I don't tend to enjoy piano focused jazz as much as other instruments (gimme them horns and vibes pls), but when it's a fusion legend like Chick, it's hard not to get sucked in by his playing.
Mourn very cool, kind of lives in an in between spot for me where it’s not as heavy or melodic as the stuff i would really reach for regularly but the songs are great and the guitar sounds are really, really cool and eclectic. The Tree and Frog’s World especially were really great in that department. Also very tight and focused record, appreciate that. Chick record is awesome, unsurprisingly. I haven’t heard much of his acoustic stuff but this is a style I really dig, that hard bop engine with post-bop sensibilities. The way the bass and piano lines whirl around each other. It makes perfect sense that this was right before Miles snatched him for his band, they’re on similar wavelengths and his willingness to explore electric sounds would’ve also aligned with Miles. You can notice some of what you can hear on At the Plugged Nickel on this, some of the post-bop vocab where the bassist will play slower feeling lines as the keys speed up and vice versa. Speaking of the bass, Miroslav has quite a discography himself - a few classic ECM records, a few classic fusion records with early Weather report and solo Zawinul and Larry Coryell, plenty of work with DeJohnette and some with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Terje Rypdal, Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd etc. Quite a lineup on this thing
Sorry, haven’t been able to participate in this the way I wanted with kids stuff, whoever is next can go
No worries- there is still time to catch up. If you still want to share an album, please do. If not, we can pass on to @PauLo
I don't think folks should need to apologize or skip their turn, life stuff is natural and it seems like plenty of folks in this thread ebb and flow discussion-wise
Enjoyed the Chick Corea record. Not totally something I seek out, but it was a pleasant listen as I sorted through things in my apartment the man is obviously an insanely talented musician
Right then, my choice. I’m going for… Genevieve Artadi - Everything Is Under Control Got into Genevieve big last year, both solo stuff and her albums with Louis Cole as Knower. I’m shite at describing music. Kinda art pop type stuff but kinda jazzy? Weird RnB? I dunno. It’s entirely produced by Real Bad Man, who most probably know as a hip hop producer, but this is anything but hip hop. But yeah. Good album IMO.
I have been swamped the last few weeks, but I should have a lighter schedule for the next few weeks at least. I’m going to try to catch up.
Just finished @PauLo pick this week and you know what? I enjoyed it! It went by quickly and it was a fun, interesting album. I really liked Kill The Lie, Wrong Shape and Everything Is Under Control. Honestly all the songs on this album were really good. Not normally my thing but I can definitely see myself giving this another spin. Looks like she has a few other albums that I might have to check out as well. Nice pick!
@bradsonemanband I’m really enjoying this Mourn record. It feels like a blend of Weakend Friends and Wet Leg with some noise rock and even a hint of Americana twang. It’s a quick listen too, making 35 minutes feels like 20. I’m for sure going to spin it a few more times before moving on to the next one.
Busy week for me so I apologize for not getting to the Genevieve album yet. I plan to tomorrow. Hopefully others get a chance to listen and share their thoughts too since it was quiet this week. anyway we’re keeping it moving. @Yourbiggestflan your turn tomorrow (Wednesday)
Crunchtime at work for me right now but I will be returning to catch up when I have the emotional bandwidth for new music lol.
