Hell yeah. Will do. This cycle already has maybe my favorite jazz album of all time (Miles), a sleeper classic (Safetysuit) and an artist I keep hoping against hope will blow up (LaHavas) so it's a killer mix.

  4. First song on Actor was dope, album was solid and I'm really partial to the dreamy/vintage/cinematic sounding stuff throughout. She's obviously talented and I didn't mean to derail the conversation earlier, she just irks me lol.

I think she really found her sound on the next one, tbh. Actor is good, but the next was a big leap forward.

Listened to Strange Mercy the other day after Actor. I still can’t choose between the two but it’s an excellent album

  9. I’m only halfway through Katrina but this is great. Love the guitar and keyboard tones some impressive shifting of styles within. A lot of these going on the summer playlist, love that bright feeling. I would love to hear a jam band cover Cry to Me.

  10. wait this is the original Walking on Sunshine? lmao was not ready for it. I mean obvious banger strictly speaking but i’ve heard it on soooo many commercials it’s hard to fully enjoy it lol. still got those cool guitars

Enjoyed Katrina a fair amount though it was a bit hard to latch onto an identity for the album. Seems like a mishmash of styles, which obviously makes things interesting track-by-track but also keeps it at arm’s reach for me. I really liked Machine Gun Smith and The Sun Won’t Shine Without You. Will listen to it again later this week to see if it sinks in further

    "I'd Kill To Fall Asleep"

I enjoyed the Katrina & the Waves album. I mean come on, Walking On Sunshine is a classic! But the other songs were pretty good too. A fun, quick, good album. I think Cry For Me, Going Down to Liverpool, Mexico and of course Walking On Sunshine were my favorites. I would have been 4 when this album came out so I don’t think I ever got around to it previously but it took me back to the house I grew up in and my parents playing music in the kitchen. I can almost hear I Got You Babe by Sonny & Cher….they listened to that song a lot! Thanks for the pick @cshadows2887

I love how they update a particular strain of like '50s/'60s R&B to their era on "Game of Love". A truly joyful closer.

I feel like I heard that song for the first real time when I heard it in context of the album. Like I'd heard it 1,000 times but never listened.

I’d be fine with never hearing walking on sunshine again but there was some ok stuff on the record.

  16. Definitely felt that a little, still didn't quite feel like the first time. Maybe i just listened a little more previously lolol

Katrina and the Waves is a ton of fun. I absolutely love the way it sounds. The guitar and drum tones on this are a chef’s kiss. They have that classic kind of 80’s sound that feels like it was made to fill an arena, but the drums in particular don’t come with that somewhat muffled and compressed tone. It’s sounds a little more natural. Do You Want Crying and Que Te Quiero are absolute ear worms. While it’s obvious why Walking On Sunshine became such a huge hit (I’ve heard it a million times, but I still love it), I’m surprised those didn’t catch on as well. Cry For Me is a solid blues jam that really builds to huge finish. Going Down To Liverpool is a nice change of pace. The last few tracks haven’t grabbed me as much, but overall I’ve really had a good time listening to this one.

This makes me want to do a deeper dive into some more “one hit wonders”.

I am here! Definitely a daily user, but not heavy on posting.

My recommendation is the Self-Titled debut by San Fermin:

I heard about San Fermin on an all songs considered episode in 2013 and have been diligently following them since. To those not familiar, they are the brainchild of the orchestral Ellis Ludwig-Leone. Over they years they have had a rotation of musicians and today the constants are him and singer Allen Tate.

On their debut, Ludwig-Leone wrote 100% of the record and enlisted Allen Tate and Lucius on vocals. The amazing Lucius vocals combined with the deep register of Allen Tate (hard not to compare to The National's Matt Berninger) is a pretty wild combination.

"Sonsick" is a standout track. Just such a fun pop song and Lucius soars. Hope you enjoy! They have a rich catalogue after this debut to dig into.

  23. Catching up.

I've actually been listening to this Katrina and the Waves album the past couple weeks! haha. I got a question about "Walking on Sunshine" wrong at bar trivia because I was CERTAIN it was by The Bangles, and I have been in a Mandela Effect nightmare ever since haha.

It's always interesting when you know a song your whole life but when someone mentions the band name to you, you just stare blankly at them.

With all that said, I took a deep dive into them, and I really liked this album. "Do You Want Crying" is definitely the front runner when it comes to standout tracks that aren't "Walking on Sunshine."

Interesting first listen. The first half often reminded me instrumentally another pick from the thread, Jens Lekman. Tracks like Crueler Kind have a kind of similar upbeat, layered and bombastic quality. That song also sounds so familiar to something else I’ve heard, but for the life of me, I cannot not figure it out and it’s driving me crazy.

I definitely hear the National comparison in the singer’s voice. Perhaps a bit instrumentally too.

The final section of this album becomes so dissonant I found it kind of upsetting to listen to. I had to skip the end of In Waiting. I didn’t dislike it, but it just freaked me out for some reason haha.

    "I'd Kill To Fall Asleep"

Just finished the San Fermin album and again a name I've seen but never got around to listening to. Again not my thang...but I enjoyed the instrumentation and the female vocals a bit. I definitely hear The National comparisons in the male singers voice and maybe that's why I wasn't that into it, I don't really enjoy The National except for like 1 song (Mr. November). Anyways an interesting pick, I might have liked it better if it was just the female vocals or an instrumental album even. Always cool to check out something new though! Thanks for the pick @callmetmax. Favorite songs were Sonsick, Methuselah, and Torero and Oh, Darling
