Gonna finally dip my feet in the album club pool. Good first album too, like a bit of Lizzy. Although it's been 3/4 years since I gave a listen, so will give it a spin later.

some good reading on Lizzy's career (though I don't necessarily agree with everything the writer says) which was stopped short by cancer when she died at the young age of 47.

  10. Some of this album sounds like it was inspiration for Paramore's After Laughter.

  11. Bass lines and tone on this are so good. On "Funky Stuff" right now and I've noted a riff in every song except the interlude that I need to learn.

I definitely hear this too, particularly in how the guitars are used.

  13. Yeah this record rocks, exactly what I love about that era and scene. The weirdo funk style always hits

Should go without saying but if you like this album, I would recommend checking out her other albums—Press Color, Zulu Rock, One for the Soul, and Suspense. One for the Soul and Suspense aren’t as immediate as the others but they’re still very good.

also obviously check out Fela Kuti (who was previously selected for the club) because his influence is all over this album

This is really sick, and a lot of moments made me think of the new Tropical Fuck Storm album. Wouldn't be surprised at all if this album was an influence on them.

    Fucking rips

the way she uses her voice throughout the album is so dope too. Not melodic at all, more rhythmic if anything

First listen in and I’d say when it hits it hits, but there are some rough misses too. I didn’t care for several songs. The vocal style doesn’t always work for me. Rhythmic is a pretty good descriptor. On songs like Payola it becomes extremely grating. Milk Sheik is also a miss for me, but that style of song usually is.

However, then Funky Stuff comes in and hot damn that’s a hell of a track. The bass and best drive it and everything else fills in nicely. The vocals work for me here, the style works as a hype man to keep you going. Just a perfect track.

It’s Sort Of You is another stand out. It’s like funk noir. Bim Bam Boum is also a perfect 80’s glam pop tune.

I unfortunately got a little distracted for the last few tracks, so I’m going to gives this another spin.

to be fair, Milk Sheik is an interlude if anything. it’s not even a minute long

Payola has such a weird, angular groove. Takes a second to sink into it but it bangs. The vocals are used like another instrument. I can see how it might not hit for some but I like it. It’s chaotic yet extremely controlled and that’s satisfying to me

Good album, this. Although when it moves away from the stuff that sounds like Talking Heads weirder little sister, it loses me a little.

I enjoyed most of the songs on here. Does a lot of things I wouldn't expect to hear from an album that was released in 1981
