Rostam was good. I don't think any of it reaches the highs of any of the VW albums that I like, but I enjoyed it. Never got into St. Vincent.
Just finished the St. Vincent album and again I’ve seen the name but never really checked it out. Not really my style. It was ok. It made me think of Hayley Williams newer stuff, which is also not my thing but I’m always willing to give things a shot. I get why people like it though. Maybe it would have been a bit better on a sunny day, I got that kind of vibes from it. Since I’m new here and it seems to be a reoccurring theme what does @PauLo like? lol just kidding since I seem to be on the same page. Thanks for sharing your pick @angrycandy
thanks for giving it a go. I thought it was time I chose a songstress. it was this, Fiona Apple or PJ Harvey. you're giving @PauLo a run for his money btw haha
She's extremely talented, which I respect for sure, but something about St Vincent's music has never really connected with me. I liked this album though but I don't know if I see myself returning to it or exploring more of her music. But again, I respect the hell out of her. Need more weird/cool as hell guitarist females kicking ass on huge stages.
I also need to catch up. St. Vincent making journalists crawl into a box to interview her for MASSEDUCTION and playing a pre-recorded answer for any question she deemed boring always really rubbed me the wrong way, but no doubt she's talented.
yeah my fascination with her kinda died when she started dating a billionaire and became pretty solidly yuppied out...but still good music
This album has always felt like a horror film to me which is why it remains my favorite St. Vincent album. Some tracks give off a more psychological vibe while others have a nightmareish Wizard of Oz atmosphere to it. I don't know if I'm alone in thinking that, but I know old films were her inspiration for the album. And yeah, she's definitely weird about some shit lol
just finished St. Vincent, even better as a repeat listen an infinitely listenable record with gorgeous textures. makes for an extremely assured album IMO. the guitar-heavy tracks bang (holy shit, Marrow) and the glitchy orchestration throughout is like the glue keeping it all together. i don’t really follow her outside of the music she releases so I’m not up to date on that, but I will say that this album simply rocks
Save Me From What I Want, Actor Out of Work, Laughing with a Mouth of Blood, Marrow, and The Party—all very good songs
I was extremely impressed with the bit of her live show I saw at Riot Fest one year but haven't dug too deep into her records yet. This one is really cool for all the reasons already mentioned - Congleton's production especially. Feels like every song has two or three moments that do something crazy and novel with guitars or synths.
I get random bits stuck in my head throughout the day these kids are foaming at the mouth psychotropic Capricorns tomorrow's some kind of strangeland where all the news is good I mean come the fuck on
I’ve always enjoyed the little I’ve heard from St. Vincent, so this was a good excuse to finally dive deeper into her work. This is really great stuff. Marrow in particular is this manic dance track whose beat got stuck in my head instantly. It feels ahead of its time for 2009 too. I’m going to give this a few more spins to fully form my thoughts around it, but definitely a standout pick for me.
@cshadows2887 just a reminder that it's your turn tomorrow (Tuesday). looking forward to whatever you have for us!
Shit I apologize. I haven't been keeping up, so if you guys don't think it's fair for me to pick one I get it.
It’s all good. You always have great picks when you’re active. Please still take your turn if you have something in mind!
If you do still want me to, I'm going with an album I really think everyone should hear but dismiss because they think it's a one-hit wonder: Katrina and the Waves - Katrina and the Waves (1985) Kimberly Rew, the guitarist from the Soft Boys before this band, wrote almost all the songs and you can hear that kinda tough muscular guitar and sharp songwriting. And they pull in some retro '60s hooks into an updated '80s rock format. I can't say enough about it
