You submitted a song from this for Music League, right? I definitely listened to this record and loved it!
Takemura’s recorded stuff hasn’t gripped me the same way it did live, but it’s still worth checking out. Live jazz Andre 3000 sounds like a trip. That must have been wild.
Mabe Fratti is great so far. I can even understand a tiny fraction of the lyrics with the very little of Spanish I know.
This is a really interesting record. The opening track reminds me “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”, the opener from Queens of the Stone Age’s Like Clock Work. The sound on the record overall is very minimalist with just vocals and cello being the core of most songs. But that helps all the additional elements really liven up and add texture to the tracks. It reminds me of Justin Beck from glassjaw talking about how he builds songs around the rhythm section and then the guitar is what adds color to it. It’s one of the most unique sounding records I think we’ve had in this thread so far.
Catching up. Forest Swords album is as dope and cinematic as I remembered it. Strikes a nice balance of being both meditative and driving. Great to work to and get in the zone. The fragmented choral arrangements dispersed among the broken chords in The Highest Flood is such a cool sound—reminds me a bit of 65daysofstatic from the 2000’s-2010’s. The ethnic infusions/sampling among the industrial production throughout heighten it even more. Great album.
Mabe Fratti album is literally perfect. Her voice is heavenly and soul-melting—the Spanish lyrics are a joy to my ears. The instrumentation is gorgeous and dreamy. No notes here. Everyone should be checking this one out. Highly recommend exploring her other stuff which is also phenomenal. Her album Vidrio from 2023 rules.
Something really cool about Mabe Fratti is how experimental it is while sacrificing none of the melodies. Reminds me a bit of How To Dress Well or ML Buch in this way. The melodies on this album are simply beautiful, ear-worms at every turn.
Listening to this Forest Swords album makes me think I should give his last one another listen, I came out of the Bolted album cycle liking the deconstructed version a lot more than the original. Dude knows how to write a compelling track, wish I'd gone to his Empty Bottle show a few months back.
It’s the slow, brooding bass (or cello in this case). It’s sets a perfect tone for the rest of the record in both cases.
Forgot to say something about Mabe Fratti here yesterday. That record rules, as was mentioned earlier her ability to balance pop sensibilities and experimentation/dissonance is incredible.
I think I’ve done murder by death and Pompeii, my go to “these guys are underrated” …let me think on it !
Got it. SYDNEY SPRAGUE - SOMEBODY IN HELL LOVES YOU (deluxe) Got so into her couple albums last year. Just fantastic, inspired indie/emo/pop rock.
Glad you guys dug the Mabe Fratti record! Still have to listen to her other stuff myself (which I plan to do very soon)
