Oh fun, I definitely owe this band a listen considering I've seen Phish play their song Golden Age 8 times and it took me until the 5th to know it was a cover. And I just now heard the original for the first time and loved it. And like I've been told by my Phish friends it was certainly not what I expected lol. Clap your hands (clap clap clap) if you think you're in the right place. Anywhere here's the Phish version if you'll forgive me posting it:
Okay continuing catch-up (sorry y'all): Record in a Bag was really fun. Goofy but taking itself seriously enough to keep me on board, Americanarama was a big standout for me.
I just finished that one, I really liked it! Wove together sounds I never would've thought to combine and worked every single time, kept me on my toes (in a good way). The phrase "jazz fusion" calls to mind a pretty specific sound for me and this is nothing like that but it's also the most fitting descriptor I can think of for it (complementary).
Dear Science is really fucking good. I listened to it once years ago so it was like listening to it for the first time this morning. Crying is probably my favorite track. This band is one I always want to listen to more, but just keep forgetting to. Love their sound
In my catchup I accidentally went right to Omnipotent Youth Society, which absolutely whips. Doing A LOT genre wise but all feels at home together, I need trumpets like that on every album forever (okay maybe not EVERY album but ya know).
^ Brass with distorted guitars is a much underutilised blend. I'm 14 by Couch Slut for a resoundingly different but no less great example.
Absolutely loving Dear Science. The warmth of the production and the energy of the performances make for a great combination.
I liked a fair amount of this, especially the songs Halfway Home, Golden Age, Red Dress, Love Dog, and Heroic Dose. production may be a bit too polished throughout for my liking but the songwriting is mostly good, and the late-era Modest Mouse vibes either land for me or they don't. overall an interesting album - would be down to check out the Cookie Mountain one (the name brings to mind the Tim and Eric episode of "brownie mountain" lol)
glad you enjoyed my only real criticism of the record is that there might be just a bit too much banger to slow song going on in certain parts of it
^ Had this on in the car a couple of days ago and had a similar thought; or, moreso, that some of the bangers don't quite bang enough to make that pattern work. As soon as Stork & Owl came on, I thought, almost out loud, that the previous song needed to be more of an assault, a Wolf Like Me-type song. I always really, really like their sense of rhythm and bounce. I can't quite find the words to perfectly explain it right now but the bop and forward momentum of their music really makes the melodies sing. And that cuts through live. And I know this is probably because it's forever tethered to a particularly badass Breaking Bad scene, but DLZ is such a badass song in its own right.
First listen, I loved the first three tracks but I found myself losing interest after that. I’m gonna have to try again later.
I’ve listened to a handful of TV on the Radio albums but i don’t think I’ve heard this one before. Firing it up now
