Also highly recommend listening to Mista Thug Isolation to see his journey from there to now. Love that tape
First time listening to Lil Ugly Mane and I was not disappointed. A lot of really cool things going on here. Gonna have to check out more
I really liked this, knew he had switched up his sound but had no idea what to expect specifically. Really cool and original psych sound
Listening now. Always loved this but don’t return to it often enough. Such a unique, great vibe. Early Gorillaz came to mind at first, and it’s never occurred to me until now but I feel like there’s also an early Animal Collective vibe to some of this. At least in the warped/distorted childhood tone. I love the trip-hoppy songs on this. Benadryl Submarine is such a banger.
The range on this album is wild. There are shoegazy tracks amid jazzy tracks and it all fits. The beauty of Beach Harness, the punchiness of Headboard, the weird af Styrofoam… it all feels very inspired.
It’s interesting how he subverts expectations with the lyrics, which seem dark but in an almost humorous? ironic? way. Idk the word for it
I think we should give everyone 12 hours because we don't know what anyone's day (or time zone) may look like, but that's my opinion. Could always tag whoever's on deck
I am so sorry guys, I completely forgot about this thread and haven't been in a very post-y mood lately. I'll post one though! I just found out about this record pretty recently and it's been intriguing me, so maybe some of you will like it. It's Record In A Bag by the band Hollerado. It's an energetic, happy power pop/indie record. Reminds me sort of The Weakerthans and The Hives. I am a sucker for nasally vocals which might be a turn off for some people. My favorite two tracks are Juliette and Got To Lose.
listening now. wouldn’t really describe the vocals as nasally, at least not as much as I expected it's fun and summery, though not really my thing. nothing blowing me away, but the musicianship is tight and it's catchy. I think the second half of the album is much stronger than the first faves are Fake Drugs, On My Own, Got to Lose, and Riverside
It took me a few listens, but Lil Ugly Mane finally clicked for the most part with me. The first half is a little too sleepy, but once you get to VPN it really starts clicking and I finally got on the record’s wave length. porcelain slightly is a 10/10 track. It’s about the exhaustion of being at odds with your thoughts and self doubt and having no where to hide from them (my interpretation at least), but it’s set to this bouncy, bubbly rocking instrumentals almost like what the mood and mindset the subject of the song is try to get to.
I hear zero Weakerthans in this (aside from them both being Canadian), ha. The Hives are a great comp though, and I'm really enjoying the album. Fun little power pop gem.
Record in a Bag is pretty fun. I hear the hives in it for sure, but the band I’m thinking of the most is Pup. Though pup’s first record didn’t come out until 2013, so if there’s any influence it’s obviously the other way around. Or maybe this is just a uniquely Canadian sound for a band lol.
