Just wanna say I appreciated the Alex G choice. God Save the Animals is probably my second favorite from him behind House of Sugar. This week im going with Have You Considered Punk Music by Self Defense Family. Featuring Pat Kindlon of Drug Church and a constantly rotating cast of musicians, SDF has been around since 2004 and was originally known as End of a Year. They have an unbelievable output with over 30 singles/EPs and dozens of splits plus 6 studio albums. Punk Music is an examination of creativity, art vs. commerce, and creating art for arts sake.
is it possible for the first post to be updated with all the recent picks? would love to catch up but dont want to scroll through pages of the thread
Also hell yeah Self Defense Family, great pick. If folks like this, they should check out Heaven is Earth and Try Me!
Absolutely love that Self Defense Family album. Such a great moody record I still need to listen to the steve hiett album, it sounds right up my alley but it not being on Spotify is making it difficult
This SDF album is really cool. I remember liking Try Me when it came out but I hadn't listened to any of their stuff since then. This one kept going in directions I didn't expect — I thought it would get heavier at some point — and the arrangement on the closing track is so interesting.
SDF album was really cool, not what I was expecting, feel like I listened to some album by this band 10 years ago and never returned. Definitely will return to this one, feel like there's a lot more to get from it
they have a million releases and i think they're all worth checking out. Drug Church is cool but would love another Self Defense Family album
Not sure about an album but Pat as definitely mentioned on Axe To Grind they got some music in the chamber.
I listened to a few of their albums/EPs a couple years ago, but i don’t remember listening to this one before. Pretty solid listen. The title track was the standout for me.
@Craig Manning is up, then @Contender , but both have bowed out previously. Do you guys want in on your picks, or do you want me to remove you from the list and move onto @WadeCastle ?
I have seen a lot of love for Zach Bryan around these parts and on my social media feeds lately, and a lot of those people have said things along the lines of "I don't normally listen to this type of music, but..." So this week, we're going to spend some time with a band whose catalog is essentially Zach's urtext. On the last Zach Bryan album, on a song called "East Side of Sorrow," there's a line about how "Turnpike's back together and they're writin' songs." It's a reference to Turnpike Troubadours, a country band from Zach's home state of Oklahoma, and for my money, one of the best bands of the 21st century, in any genre. Turnpike Troubadours took a lengthy hiatus between 2017 and 2023, while the lead singer and chief songwriter Evan Felker went to rehab for alcoholism. But they came back last year, dropping their latest album, A Cat in the Rain, the same day that Zach Bryan's latest came out. You can't go wrong with that album, or frankly with any of the Turnpike albums, but I picked an older one: 2010's Diamonds & Gasoline, which has a lot of that same boisterous, barnstorming feel that Zach taps into on his rockers, and a lot of the same layered, nuanced storytelling you get on Zach Bryan ballads. I really can't imagine liking those Zach Bryan albums and not liking this, so I hope y'all dig it!
I don't really love Zach Bryan tbh but I'm always keen to listen to genre staples, so I'll listen to this with an open mind.
Lol I guess I should listen to that Zach Bryan ablum too. i'm not a don't like country/bluegrass guy at all its just not my wheelhouse at all. i do like to tell my billy strings fan friends that he needs to get a drummer, they get mad
Not gona lie, I was really dreading this pick. I’m not a fan of country of all, but I’m loving this. I think it’s driving enough that it feels like an even twangier Limbeck or something. Great pick, hope others give it a shot
Only a few songs in, but "Limbeck if they were actually a country band" is a great description of it so far.
