I enjoyed Alex Gs 2019 album “House of Sugar” so I really do need to check this album out. He probably got something else in the work for this year. How do I get added to the list?
I'll add you now! I love House of Sugar as well. Definitely report back with any thoughts you have on this one!
I've listened to most of his albums around the times they released but haven't gone back to them nearly as much as I've gone back to this one. I'll have to throw some on during the week
I definitely feel he's improved with time, House of Sugar and Beach Music are my favorites after this one
Listened to this on my walk today. Big fan of the saving the animals bird cover. Ive had a similar experience as other, enjoying Alex G albums when they come around out but not sticking with them for too long. This was hitting the spot on my walk, could of done without the hyper pop but thats just me. Shout out to the first G song I heard during some stream, searched it out to find no other songs like it.
Very curious to hear your thoughts! Seems like something that might speak to you, just based on your tastes and writing. "Brick" goes dummy hard lol
Some notes from the person that picked it and clearly loves this album/artist: - Love "After All" as an opening track and a thesis statement, it's a record about "God" without ever defining what God actually is or should be for anyone. It's the thing that's always there for you, even on your worst days. Hell, it could be music; I think a lot about that line in "Cross the Sea" ("You say that nothing is final/I cut myself into vinyl") - "Runner" is his best single yet - My wife, who is not a superfan but a casual listener because of my fandom, got teary when she found out "Mission" was about a dog lol - As the most WTF song here, "S.D.O.S." has grown on me immensely. He opened with this when we saw him last year and it went super hard - "Ain't It Easy" has grown to be one of my favorites, feels very in line with something from Beach Music or even DSU - Love the 8-but shit in "Cross the Sea" - "Blessing" is another WTF song and a crazy choice for a lead single lmao but it also goes hard as hell - "Early Morning Waiting" is very Elliot Smith - "Immunity" is probably my favorite on the album, really love the lyrics on that one - We played "Miracles" at my wedding :) - "Forgive" is a great closer that really speaks to my anxiety.
Tried to get into Alex G several times but their discography is so vast that I was kind of lost on where to start...Wasn't too big of fan of what I heard. It'll be great to try with this one again!
I'll post more specific thoughts later but I'm enjoying this album more than I did at the time. At the time I was very impressed — I could draw out no issue with it — but, outside of a couple of tracks, it gave me no particular urge to return. I'm glad @Aaron Mook's forced a relisten though.
these first two songs are really speaking to me “After All” was like a revelation. really connect with it
Oh shit, I was out of town for a week and not getting updates from this thread. I'm excited to check out the last two albums
There have been times in the past couple of years that "Forgive yesterday, I choose today" has been enough to make me tear up
"Kicker" and "Snot" are contenders for my favorite Alex G songs Feel like @angrycandy would appreciate "In Love" because it gives me Twin Peaks vibes
Those were some of the highlights for me. Mud may be my favorite on that one. Gotta give it some more listens
