I also prefer the deep pitch songs. I don't think they use it much on Plunge, but their most recent Radical Romantics has a couple songs with that vocal effect . Every record is great imo
Can't believe it's taken me this long to check them out, it's like Tegan and Sara produced by OPN lol I could see needing to be in the mood for it, but it really is up my alley. Awesome pick. Love "When I Grow Up" and "Dry and Dusty" so far
Hell yeah, glad you're into it! Some of my favorite tracks too. Really hard to pick one favorite because it always changes for me
I know this is about the debut, but if you dig that please go listen to their album that came out last year, Radical Romantics. Just so fucking good and Kandy was probably my song of the year. Fever Ray is quickly becoming an all-timer for me
Unfortunately going to file this one under well made albums that just aren’t for me. A lot of neat production stuff going on, but I couldn’t get into the vocals at all.
Folks that like this, I'm a big fan of their early work, so if you like this, I'd recommend Red of Tooth and Claw. Or if you're looking for something a little less country-fied, Like the Exorcist But More Breakdancing and Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them are both more emo-adjacent, the former in particular. Elements of post-rock and such. Gerard Way and Geoff Rickly do guest vocals on the latter. The first review I ever wrote on AP.net was for Like the Exorcist, haha. I also have an interview with Adam on this site if anyone is interested.
MBD is probably my pick for most underrated band. they have enough of a cult following to keep a long career going, selling out niche shows in caves and haunted hotels, etc. in the time when folk sort of blew up, with Mumford and sons, Lumineers, etc, I’m a little surprised they didn’t ride that wave and get some broader appeal. their early stuff is more jammy and spooky, and they get a little more folky or western later. this album is the perfect middle ground between all their styles. The last song just kills me. it also might be my favorite vinyl packaging ever. Lots of moon-related die-cuts.
