my pick is We Are The Air by Josephine Collective. this is their only full-length album amongst demos and EPs and it holds a special place in my heart because it blends all the genres i love, pop punk, metal, post hardcore, screamo, emo, lil dance thrown in there. it was recorded by John Feldmann so all these years later sonically it holds up. bummer they never released anything afterwards but this one and done is a hell of a catchy album. i hope you all enjoy it and take a blast back in time with it! :)
after one song, I really don’t think this album is gonna be for me but I’ll be fair in my assessment of it
just finished the album. I was right, it’s not for me, though there were a few bright spots along the way.
this is their sole music video, I've seen some of their live videos through youtube and their sets always looked chaotic and fun! when the time machine is finally invented I'll go back in time and catch a set!
Feels similar to the Ambry album, in that it's pretty clearly a band that revered the scene icons of their era, but in this case it's Underoath and Silverstein and The Used instead of Taking Back Sunday and Thursday. I can't imagine how cool it must have felt for these guys to get picked out of the Myspace jungle by John Feldmann. I was into a lot of bands that sounded like this in 2008 (and was also in one), and I can see myself being into some of these songs at that time, especially the more pop-punk leaning ones. Now, without any specific nostalgia for it, it's far too of its era to appeal to me when I could throw on one of the albums I was actually listening to then. "Leave Me Love" is such a relic of the early GarageBand crunkcore era, which I would definitely like to leave in 2008 and never think about again.
After the first couple songs I was dreading a brutal listen but there’s some pretty solid hooks throughout this. The singer sounds super familiar. The lyrics are horrendous, either full of the typical scene cliches or just weird/gag inducing “You’re my pretty pretty princess” ooof. while I didn’t love this or Ambry, I think they’re great picks. It’s fun to look into the past and wonder what the fuck we were doing
all good homie! i had the album in mind when the thread started and then as all the shoegazey/emo/poppy/indie stuff was posted i was like oh yah, no one is gonna like this 2008 release LOL
I would agree that even if this particular record isn't resonating with people, it's an interesting and unique choice and you shouldn't feel bad about people not being into it. It's fun to revisit stuff like this, even if it feels a lifetime away from what I listen to now. Like what you like!
