Okay I've listened to more 90s hip hop this week than the last 5 years so great timing, just put it on
really great album. the De La Soul vibes are strong throughout. hyped to now check out their later albums
Oh yeah, this was great. Most of my 90s hip-hop favorites are obvious ones - Mobb Deep, Nas, Jay-Z. Lots of East Coast stuff. I see they're from Jersey, but I definitely picked up on more of the early conscious hip-hop stuff going on here and found it pretty unique for the time (but again, there's still so much I haven't heard yet). Is their other stuff worth digging into as well?
I'll check them out after my Navy Blue run this morning! Really on a hip-hop kick right now. But going from stuff like this to Griselda is giving me whiplash, lol
Digible Planets are incredible. They might’ve done that jazzy rap sound the best. Some obvious 90s/early 2000s standouts but I also love The Pharcyde, Reflection Eternal, Black Star, all the De La Soul albums, Tribe, early Common, a TON of Southern rap… been getting more into the Wu-Tang solo output as well but I wouldn’t quite call that “jazzy.” Some other lesser known albums on this same vibe also well worth checking out:
@Doomsday whatchya got for us? also just something I noticed, @OhTheWater doesn't have a spot on the list. do you want to squeeze in a turn ahead of my turn (next week) since you haven't gone yet?
Totally forgot to comment when I listened earlier this week, but I really liked the Poor Righteous Teachers album. Really fun, and yet another reminder that I need to dig way more into hip hop.
Hey sorry guys! Okay I’m gonna choose one of my favorite records that I think not a huge amount of people here would’ve heard. My choice is We Shall All Be Healed by The Mountain Goats, a mostly melancholic indie folk/rock album that deals with themes of addiction. A very personal and raw album, one of my all time favourites. Here it is on Spotify
I love “Your Belgian Things” but I’ve generally spent less time with this album than other Goats stuff. Excited to dig in this week.
