Hell yeah and likewise. Please do lmk if you (or anyone else) finds something that resonates from my list! Love to discuss
Yeah it's a bummer. Their live album without Isaac was great, but I fell off of this new one after a listen or two. You do hear the influence of Ants on so many other artists, though. Geese/Cameron's solo tape, the Dove Ellis album, Racing Mount Pleasant and caroline. I feel like it's as influential to a certain strain of indie rock as Dijon's Absolutely has been to indie (and now I guess mainstream) pop.
Ants was definitely way better than the latest but it never clicked with me like it did for some people. Thought fellow Windmill Scenesters Black Midi kinda blew them out the water all ways. BCNR always been too uhhhh theatrical for me
Definitely theatrical but I could latch on to the music/melodies more than any of the other post punk bands of that crop. Could never get into Black Midi and absolutely hated the Greep solo record. Tbf, I also don't like the first BCNR record. They're 1(.5 with the live)/3 for me.
I feel that way about black midi. Love John L bc it basically feels like a primus song lol, can’t get into the rest
I like the Geordie Greep album significantly more than anything else from these bands. I couldn't get into Black Midi at the time but that album has me wanting to revisit them. All four of the BC,NR albums are pretty close for me, I really like every iteration of the band so far.
Yeah there isn’t a huge jump or dip in quality between BCNR releases for me. I probably like ants as a whole the least but it also has the best two songs
This is what I have in mind right now: 1. Arm's Length - There's a Whole World Out There 2. Moving Mountains - Pruning of the Lower Limbs 3. Pool Kids - Easier Said Than Done 4. 1. Geese - Getting Killed 2. Mei Semones - Animaru 3. SML - How You Been 4. Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal 5. The Acacia Strain - You Are Safe From God Here 6. Resavoir & Matt Gold - Horizon 7. Home Is Where - Hunting Season 8. The Callous Daoboys - I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven 9. lots of hands - into a pretty room 10. The Necks - Disquiet 11. Cory Hanson - I Love People 12. A lot of stuff in Honorable Mentions that might be higher if I had spent more time with it. Last year I had 2x the scrobbles I did this year so the list is a little flimsy. All great stuff tho
I almost want to make a separate list for jazz and ambient albums. I listen to so much of it, but it's hard to rank alongside all the non-instrumental stuff
I think Ants is probably as good as Heavy Metal and better than Getting Killed. Great record! I wonder if Isaac will ever make any more music. Idk much about the band or how much of that was him vs the entire band, so maybe they were gonna make this one anyway.
Black midi is an interesting band to me, I don't love but I mostly enjoy. The solo one though, terrible
