Crazy year of music!!! Yet again so much stuff that I could have given more time to, especially the stuff in the teens and twenties of my list. I spent a lot of time this year focused on my vinyl collection, which I loved but definitely prioritized over repeat listens to stuff I liked in the middle of the summer/fall. Highly recommend folks check out this Master Peace dude… he’s a British African guy making party starter rock music that feels primarily indebted to classic Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks. I think a lot of folks here would enjoy it. My other big artist find was Sunday (1994) who have a very clear lane to indie success with their blend of Mazzy Star and Alvvays. Tallied up every single list posted in this thread to see if there were any other albums I overlooked from last year. Overall, there were 1,098 albums across 101 different lists. The album in first place appeared on 33 individual lists, while the album in 50th place appeared on 8 lists. Out of the 1,098 albums in the final list, 739 appeared on only one list. Had to take some liberties while compiling this - any album marked as an 'honorable mention' wasn't counted, and lists posted 'in no particular order' were tallied in the order they were posted, etc. The full list is available here for anyone who wants it. Top 50 1. Charli xcx - BRAT 2. Kendrick Lamar - GNX 3. The Cure - Songs of a Lost World 4. Foxing - Foxing 5. MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks 6. thanks! started it last tuesday, so just a little bit over a week. i wrote a really basic script to help format each list in a way that made them easier to process, which actually ended up saving a lot of time
great calls on Capstan and Cory Wells. Will have to check out Belmont I liked IHOW’s album and would be in my top 20
That is odd. Thought for sure Brat would be the #1. I don’t think I’ve given Ballerini’s music much of a chance but I’ve never heard anything that was all that remarkable from what I have heard.
Patterns is a good album but her EP preceding it is way better, it's only 15 minutes and well worth it, definitely remarkable
Keep in mind only seven staffers submitted lists this year, and the seven of us did not have a ton of consensus. Patterns and Brat were both on three of the seven, but Patterns got three top 10 rankings (1, 2, 8) versus two for Brat (2, 6, 27).
Selfishly, I like that we had a completely different number 1, especially since I love that album and especially because I did not like most of this year’s consensus picks. Steve’s right that Welcome Mat is Kelsea’s real masterpiece, but those projects are also very closely linked, to the point where I almost consider them as one. Both are totally worth your time.
Don’t take me too seriously. I thought it was an interesting note the first time I mentioned it, and this time was clearly a joke. Kelsea is great I’m not throwing any shade about anything except for gami not being on the staff list
SC and GG are higher up the list for me, but that this is “easily their worst album” is a testament to why they are imo one of the best bands in the genre right now. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of love for bilmuri, for example, which I think sounds like Morgan wallen with state champs playing guitar. again, people like what they like, but I thought for sure oa would fit in in the chart.
Someone else mentioned it, and I’m in the camp of thinking that “With you in Spirit” was a big disappointment. Maybe I need to give the album more time. As such a big fun of all their past work, I thought it would be a top 10 album for me for sure.
