For any hip hop fans looking for something different, i just discovered an artist named Smino (Thanks to Shea Serrano) and his album NOIR is one of the best things i've heard all year. Gotta listen a bit more before ranking, but it's definitely in contention for favorite hip hop album of the year.

I think overall this year for me, there's been a lot of very good / great albums, but nothing I've heard has been an all-timer, one I think I'll be listening to forever album. Lots of very good music as always this year, but I probably couldn't have made a top 50 of albums that I've really enjoyed and played a lot this year.

 

It feels like I don't have a true number 1 this year. 2018 has certainly been a year of listening to as much new stuff possible judging off the Spotify playlist I made to track anything new I listened to this year. There's a still a pretty daunting amount of new music I'll get to in the next couple weeks.

This is a big list of ones I haven't heard. Could you throw me 5 you think might be in my wheelhouse? It'd be nice to catch up to some George recs BEFORE I make my list this year. Haha

 

I’ll make a list eventually but Saved by Now, Now and iridescence by BROCKHAMPTON are my two favorites and probably two most listened to. There were quite a few records this year that I really enjoyed but didn’t come back to. Want to make a run through all those records I haven’t listened to in a while as well as some, like Mitski, I’ve been meaning to check out.

Mastersytem: This was Scott from Frightened Rabbit's last musical project - a lot "rockier" and grungier than FR. Very very grim lyrically, especially considering what happened.

Brockhampton: A great collaborative, group hip-hop project. Really fun stuff.

Ivy Soul: Neo-Soul / Hip Hop / Spoken Word stuff, Lauryn Hill, Janelle Monae, Noname etc. Very lovely album.

Caroline Rose: Great, dancy indie-pop stuff, quite funny and silly.

Hatis Noit: Not sure how to describe this, a big weird vocal art thing, that you need to listen to with Headphones (doesn't work as much without them). Not sure what to make of it, but it's a strange and interesting 20 minute listen.

 

I liked it, didn’t love it. I will definitely listen again. In spots, it felt a little like a Lumineers/Of Monsters and Men folk pop project, which is to say enjoyable but not super unique. But then they’d take a left turn on the melody and things would get more interesting.
