Chorus.fm Members EOTY Lists 2018

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by Jason Tate, Dec 3, 2018.

  1. Here's a place for everyone to share their EOTY lists for 2018.

The Chorus.fm website contributors are hard at work at our own lists and we plan, like we did on AP.net, to post and share these on the website in early January.

Hope everyone had a great musical year and I can't wait to read all everyone's lists.

Here's the 2018 Albums thread if you need some memory refreshing on what you listened to last year.

Put this together sitting in traffic. Dammit, that formatting looks gross.

Favorite music that wasn't an album:

    2. "Mariners Apartment Complex"/"Venice Bitch" - Lana Del Rey
    3. Ariana Grande: thank u, next
    4. The Front Bottoms: Ann EP

    9. IDKHOW BUT THEY FOUND ME: 1981 Extended Play
    10. LSD: "Mountains", "Thunderclouds", "Audio", "Genius"

Janelle Monae is definitely my Album of the Year. The rest is a loose ranking, but most of this could switch around. I may even change some of this later, we'll see. I also made a top 40 on my post in the 2018 album thread, but I feel like there's no point to making a "best" list if I just include everything I liked this year. That being said: Pusha T, Lucy Dacus, and Courtney Barnett all just barely missed the cut and could really pretty easily be swapped with some of the other ones on here.

Super rough list, but as of right this second this is what I would say. That was hard! Had to leave off some other albums I really liked in general, but that didn't quite resonate with me enough as a whole to justify putting them on this list (Thrice, Empress Of, Cardi B, Robyn, The Carters, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Father John Misty, LANY, Kodaline, Sabrina Carpenter, Marie-Mai, Jess Glynne, Bebe Rexha and a few others come to mind).

At this point, my top 20:

    1 - Coheed & Cambria - Vaxis - Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures
2 - Colter Wall - Songs of the Plains
    3 - Steve Moakler - Born Ready
    4 - Super American - Tequila Sunrise
    5 - The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships
    6 - Now, Now - Saved
7 - The Story So Far - Proper Dose
8 - Death Cab For Cutie - Thank You For Today
9 - John Prine - The Tree of Forgiveness
10 - The Night Game - The Night Game
    11 - Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
    12 - Underoath - Erase Me
13 - Dave Matthews Band - Come Tomorrow
    14 - Saves the Day - 9
    15 - Heavy Things - Glimpse
16 - The Milk Carton Kids - All The Things That I Did and All The Things That I Didn't Do
    17 - Lord Huron - Vide Noir
18 - Teenage Wrist - Chrome Neon Jesus
    19 - Turnstile - Time & Space
    20 - Tiny Moving Parts - Swell
    21 - Thrice - Palms

Takeaways: Coheed blew me away...and proved they've still got their magic. Colter Wall continues to create music that makes me wish I were living on a ranch somewhere in Montana. He's quite the opposite of Steve Moakler, but both make music that captures a similar feeling...and if you don't know either of them, stop everything and get acquainted. Super American...who are these guys, where did they come from, and how did they make such a fun album?? And finally...We are witnessing one of the greatest bands to come out of this generation in The 1975. The new album is more of a grower for me than it seems to be for most...but there's no denying they're probably creating the most important music today.
EDIT: I'm going to update this list as I inevitably remember albums I forgot to include.
